Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

We live in quite a small community, one of about 25000 individuals. It’s a community where everyone knows everyone, so we hope that out project will have the impact that we desire. A major issue in our town is alcoholism. Why is that? Many people are poor so they decide to drive away their sorrow by getting drunk, without being aware of the risks they face by choosing this way. We hope that presenting these risks, we will make those people give a second thought to what they are doing and, hopefully, will realize that alcohol isn’t the last resort and that there are solutions to their problems.

2. Summary of Our Project

Alcohol is nowadays the problem number one regarding consumption of drugs. Although alcohol initially appeared in the practical use this has changed subsequently. People began to try different types of alcohol and consumption of alcoholic beverages has become a part of European culture. Luci: Since it is a theme so common among those of our age, we considered that a point of view of adolescents about alcohol consumption should be interesting. We talked to our classmates and friends that our if they struggle against excessive consumption of alcohol. After the presentations made in our school and community, we have received positive reactions from those around us. Luci: We hope that the project we initiated will contribute by reducing the number of consumers of alcohol in any corner of the world, regardless of their age. It is an issue that concerns us ALL not just SOME.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

During the conception of the project, we had to overcome many barriers, both technical and regarding the content of our website. First of all, we made researches on the theme of alcohol consumption, its advantages and disadvantages. Secondly, we organized all the materials we had, giving each team member a task according to his abilities. When the content was ready, the technical problems appeared. We overcame them with patience and with the help of our Informatics teacher.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Participating at Doors to Diplomacy gave us the chance to understand the real risks of alcohol consumption and determined us to initiate this project. Our school mates encouraged us, and the impact on the community was noticeable.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

During research for the project we acquired team-working skills, patience, conscientiousness and found out new information that amazed us and made us understand much better an actual problem that affects the world. Living in a community with a large number of alcoholics, we hope that our project will make people understand that alcohol ruins their life. Our research has revealed that the number of students that consume alcohol is ,sadly, high in our school and we also found out that these students had no problems with their parents concerning alcohol consumption. We think that in our community there is a negative mentality which we hope to change in time.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

During the conception of our project, we used personal computers and worked from home having non-stop internet connection. Our main sources of information were the internet and specialized books. The structure of the site was created using HTML and CSS language and Adobe Photoshop helped us with the design.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We composed a questionnaire with questions concerning alcohol consumption which was distributed to 672 students from our school. Finally, we centralized the data from the questionnaires and drew some interesting conclusions about how alcohol affects the life of teenagers. The conclusions have been presented in our web site so that potential visitors would see them in an interactive way and find out vital and diverse information regarding the effects of alcohol.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our initiative was appreciated amongst our school members. In our community the project had a noticeable impact and we also participated with it at a national contest, where we obtained good results. This fact made us develop our project even more and we succeded in making it more diversified and more useful. We received positive reactions, from the ones that saw it and we strongly believe that our project will reallly change lives.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

First of all, we talked to our school psychologist. This was a very interesting discussion. The psychologist, Ms. Botic explained us a lot of things about the behavior of alcoholics and so, we understood how what were the main objectives we had to complete. After this, our Biology teacher, Ms. Ionescu gave us a lot of help. She helped us with the scientific part of our project, the physical effects and also a lot of information. Our Informatics teacher, Ms. Lazarescu Antoneta gave us ideas about organizing the content and making it more attractive. We want to thank all these people for their patience and involvement.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

During the researches we made, at every step, new things appeared. We learned new and interesting things and this was a unique experience. Our project, has been appreciated among our school members and our initiative has been also considered a very good one.
