Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Tinzhu Village is located in the transitional region from the terrain’s first step Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to the second step Loess of our country. Bounded by Wushaoling, the east and west side have great difficulties. The northwest region is Qilian Mountain area, which altitude all more than 3500 meters, the main mountain has a altitude of more than 4000 meters. The big snow mountain is the highest with a altitude of 4874 meters, covered by snow all over the year, which is the headstream of Stone sheep river’s tributary Xi Ying River, Golden Tower River, Za Mu River, Huang Yang River. The wide area north to Wushaoling and south of Mao Mao Mountain, which altitude is 2620~3565 meters, mostly covered by loess and show as Loess Plateau and hill scenery. The riverside of Da Tong River southwest to the village with a altitude of 2040~2300 meters is the lowest area in the village.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our main research purpose is to use new method to record history and let the fading folk art be preserved.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1, time difficulty, because we are all high school students with heavy study tasks, our interview can only conduct the interviews on holidays, teachers made reservation and got agreement before it. 2. Economic difficulties, our interviewees all lived far away from us, so we had to take taxi to complete the interview. Thus we had great pressure on economy, thanks to guidance teachers’ help, we finally got many teachers include our schoolmaster’s help.

Use one of professor Hu’s sentence “interview is difficult but experience full of emotion.”

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

1, students understood oral history and the using methods of all kinds of digital equipment after training. 2, through field investigation, learnt more about Tianzhu local folk culture. 3, through material arrangement, protect and research the fading folk culture.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We made the WebPages this time mainly for introducing our Tianzhu’s folk culture to outside. At the same time, recording and preserving the fading folk traditional culture through the dictation of old people, folk artists and scholars, such as the “An Zhao” in our local soil family, because of the serious impact of modern civilization is facing with the danger of being lost or disappearing. If we still not to excavate and protect it, many people will not understand this culture in the future.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Through participating in oral history this meaningful activity, we further understand the fascination of Tianzhu local culture and hope through our effort, more people can understand Tianzhu and like Tianzhu, thus enable our local culture be preserved and transmitted. 4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We faced with many difficulties but also got many people’s help in the interview process. First, thanks to our schoolmaster Jiang, after knowing our wishes, he actively helped us contact the local cultural personage and arranged school car for our trip. Also thanks to Grandpa Jiang, schoolmaster Ma and Grandpa Li Zhanzhong,they all supported us when they knowing our interview activity. They said: seeing our youth of 16,17 years old had such enthusiastic to local culture, they feel very satisfied. At the same time, they also see hopes of national culture transmission from us.”

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Through this activity, we really found and understood the charm of national culture, for example, soil family culture, though they have their no own words but they have their own language, their cultural transmission mainly through holidays, weddings, recorded and transmitted their histoy by oral singing form. A wedding tells the history of soil family. over the one thousand years, generation by generation, continue like this and never stop.
