Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Xi’an Town was located in the west of Haiyuan County and only 25 km apart from the Haicheng Town, governing 11 administrative villages. Within the boundaries, there was Anxiang remain in Song and Xia dynasty, “the vegetable garden remains” the Neolithic Age and the ancient beacon tower. During the Republic of China, Xi’an County was set. Until 1958, it was changed into the people's commune, in 1984, it was changed into county. In 1997, the area was 331.6 square kilometers, the population 23,000, governed 9 administrative villages like Xi'an, Xue Tao, Bai Ji, Hu Wan, Futao, Fan Tai, the Xiao He, Yuanhe and Caiyuan.

2. Summary of Our Project

The small fennel produced in Haiyuan County was with beautiful color, pure taste and superior nature, which was honored as the superior seasoning. Along with the unceasing improvement of living standard, the city and countryside residents and especially those in economy developed area are getting bigger and bigger demand for small fennel and the high quality small fennel was quite in people's favor. The Haiyuan county party committee and the government take the fennel planting as the superior characteristic industry of our county to carry on the key development, through the policy guidance, fund support and market led; it enables the considerable development of fennel planting in our county. At present, the total area for fennel planting reached 57,000 Chinese acres and become a new luminescent spot of the local rural economy and the farmer additional income.

School computer limited, and students on the machine inconvenient

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We went far away from school to interview, students had class from Monday to Saturday, we can only interview on Sunday, so we could not guarantee that the people we want to interview was free, we only could make a appointment with them and went there next time. However, when they heard that we are teacher and students and want to promote the fennel, the local farmers are very kind.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

I and my students are very pleased to be able to participate in web-Expo, will not only allow students to experience the learning process of inquiry, but also improved the ability of students to produce web pages, we hope to achieve good results

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The school had less opportunity to organize students in extracurricular study, our group organized students to spend a very long time to complete a study on a topic and presented it by a homepage, this has provided the related experience to our school's other group study. At the same time, we made our own effort in promoting the local agricultural product, we felt very happy. To help others is to help us!

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

The telephone (contact with who we want to interview), the television (understood the local fennel and information), the digital camera (gain pictures), record pen (record interview content and reorganization), the computer software(make a website), the books, the local newspaper and so on.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In order to gain the information which we need, we must carry on the thorough communication with the local farmers. We explained first that we were teacher and students, so we were more closer to each other, then we told them that our purpose is to promote the fennel, the farmers were very happy to hear that. The local farmers told us that the fennel has sold to Germany and they want more people in the world to understand that Haiyuan's fennel, let Haiyuan's fennel sell more distant.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We discovered that the local farmer's major industry has already been changed into the fennel planting, the fennel already helped them to become rich, they want to let more people know about Haiyuan and the Haiyuan fennel. They want to promote their product but they don’t have too many ways.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

In order to gain the information which we need, we must carry on the thorough communication with the local farmers.
