Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Kaohsiung, original a seaside city, is transformating to an industry- and service-prosperous city. During the transformation, many have been lost. While striving hard to create new things and preserve old traditions at the same time, Kaohsiung City is becoming finely energetic.

2. Summary of Our Project

Headwear industry is never a mainstream business in Kaohsiung. Kingstree Headwear Shop is one of the best in the trade. In order not to be ousted from the market, it is trying its best to design fashionable merchandize to cater to the new generation. The prupose of this project is to let people in Taiwan know that there is a local headwear shop that can make quality and inexpensive hats.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Sometimes there seems to be some kind of Internet breakdown which makes project uploading difficult.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Before doing the project, students nearly knew nothing about the topic. However, through meetings and instructions, they gradually knew how do move along. And though computer facilities are more than enough in our school, they had to do their web pages on their own, of course after the teachers' instructions.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

It really improved the organizing skills on the part of teachers, and communication skills and logical thinking on the part of students.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

This project is really the extension of courses of introduction to business and business management. In doing this project, students learned to communicate with one another. They also learned how to communicate with strangers when asking people to fill out the questionnaire items on the streets. Last but not the least, they realized that the Internet can really help them do 'serious' jobs.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We have more than ten up-to-date computer classrooms for them to use. Students relied heavily on computer and the Internet when doing the project. When interviewing the boss and workers, they sought the help of tape recorders. They more often than not consulted books and magazines to complement their assignments.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Students talked with their peers and parents about what they were doing. When issuing the questionnaire sheets to the passersby on the streets, they introduced the target enterprise to them. By participating in globalschoolnet, they let the whole world know we have quality headwear industry.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The public can have more idea of the headwear industry in Kaohsiung City. When people want to buy merchandize of this kind, they might consider products made by local businesses. Students received encouragement from passersby on the streets and told them that they did a great job introducing respectable enterprise to the public.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Many teaching staff gave both the instructors and students doing the project actual or moral support. Librarians in and out of school lent their helping hands. Experts were more than willing to submit their suggestions. And parents encouraged their children to move along.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Originally, when students did their questionnaire investigation, people felt it strange for students to ask the passersby on the streets to answer the question items. But, when they realized what the students were doing, they lavished their encouragement on them. So actually people are ready to help. Besides, students finally know that incorporating what they learn at school with practice is important.
