Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

When Han people came to reclaim Meng Jia, they brought their religious beliefs with them for blessing and built Longsham Temple. Therefore, LongShan Temple is the center of religion, also illustrating the good old times of Meng Jia. It is historically significant and also a great place to have historical tours. The colorful Taiwanese traditional arts in the temple could let us spend some time to savor. What’s more, the architecture of the temple allows us to have a good look at the beauty of exquisite carving, and the ceremonies offers us chances to feel the bustling atmosphere. Stepping into LongSham Temple can not only experience the solemnness but also the meaning and characteristics of LongShan Temple. Longshan Temple is not only a temple, a second-degree historical site, but also a sightseeing attraction. There are traditional streets & shops, antique shops, Buddhists article shops, and Chinese medicine shops, and Hwashi Tourist Night Market (Snake Alley) surrounding the temple. These places are great to visit due to their richness in folk art and the traditional Chinese delicacies.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1. Because of heavy schoolwork, some old and new members dropped out from the project. However, we still held a consistent belief and worked as a team. We treasure our three excellent instructors and the volunteer parents who backed us up with no regret. 2. Due to great attendance at LongShan Temple, administrators of the temple said they couldn’t accept our interviews from the New Year’s Day to lunar New Year. It’s not a proper time because there are too many worshippers. Therefore, all members used the days before the New Year’s Day to go to LongShan Temple to do field survey and interviews. Later we went to Department of Information and Tourism and Department of Cultural Affairs to do more detailed interview on LongShan Temple. Also, we visited the temple again after the Lunar New Year to do a complete confirmation. 3. Because all members of ChingShin Orchestra are Outstanding students, during the competition, we had members participated in school’s language contests. At the same time, there was the selection of Outstanding Students and two important mid-terms. Sometimes we had to manage to deal with two tasks during the noon-break meetings. However, we members always support each other. We paid more attention on lectures and we were very focused on listening and discussing in meetings. Sometimes, we even stayed up late for doing researches. 4. Some new members weren’t familiar with the methods of homepage design, especially about how to shirk or convert photos. We spent a lot of time discussing the structure and editing the contents. First, we discussed and assigned works based on our progress. We collected materials. Members of document team and art designing team started first, Mr. Lin gave explanation from the very beginning, let us have a chance to learn from the start and review again.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Effort is the necessary reason for success. Resolution is the required condition for success. Willpower is the needed element of success. Learning is the essential factor of success. Therefore, when we were preparing for the CyberFair, we put efforts to gather materials; we were resolute to complete all our tasks; we had the willpower to face all difficulties, and, of course, we learned everything about LongShan Temple. It was tough, but the achievement and the joy were ineffable!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Grade 1-9 Curriculum emphasizes on equipping students with long lasting abilities. The preparation of Cyberfair requires students with not only the basic computer skills but also multiple skills to support and work together to complete the homepage design. The following is an illustration of how our project integrates with the Curriculum: A. Language Every progress report, meeting memo and interview script was all testing our ability of organizing and writing. The interviews were trainings of our expression and logical thinking. The project thus provides members opportunities to practice and fully utilize abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing together. B. Society The topic belongs to social area. Through deep investigations, we understand more about the culture and art of Taiwanese Temple. Combining with field survey, questionnaires and interviews, we gain a better idea about social studies. C. Art and human Designing homepages requires the skills to handle design, photography, editing and audio. The filed survey and data collection allow members to know more about the beauty of Taiwanese traditional art. D. General activity Develop team work spirit; communication between parents, teachers and students; learn to contact with study activities and field survey. E. Mathematics After collecting the questionnaires, we applied simple quantitative and statistic analysis and induced the result.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In order to get more information about Longshan Temple, we contacted some authorities concerned, such as the Department of Cultural Affairs, Department of Information and Tourism and Taipei City Archive, and the Reception counter of Longshan Temple by emails and phones. We did the interview through a field survey. Furthermore, in order to know what the public’s impression about Longshan Temple, we also conducted a survey through questionnaires with the visitors who came to the temple.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our research can help the general public to get a better understanding of LongShan Temple and its surrounding attractions. During the annual academic fair of our school, the participants presented the project to all the students in the fifth grade and the guests who attended to the fair. Through the feedback from the questionnaires with visitors who came to the Longshan Temple, we offered some suggestions for the Longshan Temple Stewardship association and the relevant governmental agencies to promote the development of the tourism industry and enhance the local characteristics. Since the Longshan Temple does not provide an English version webpage, we are willing to offer our well-designed webpage to the temple for its reference.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We would like to give our great big thanks to: A. Section Chief Chen from Department of Information and Tourism, Taipei City Government. He offered many precious materials for us during the interview B. Ms. Shen of Department from Cultural Affairs, Taipei City Government. She sent us two books specifically on LongShan Temple during the interview. C. Miss Hung Department from Cultural Affairs, Taipei City Government. She informed us which administration to turn to, and assist us contacting with them. D. Mr. Lio from Taipei City Archive. He informed us which administration to turn to, and assist us contacting with them. E. Mr. Lu and Miss Yan from LongShan Temple. They offered many precious materials for us during the interview.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

When preceding the project, we found that LongShan Temple had a significant cultural meaning. We usually went there only for worshipping. To us, it was just an ancient architecture and nothing else, and we never explored its culture and artistic expression either. Through this project, we realized the profound artistic spirit of it. During the field survey, we were surprised that LongShan temple has not only cultural significance, but also the actual pieces that represent the traditional art of Taiwanese temple. For people like us who are not acquainted with these works, they are amazing and unrivaled. Furthermore, they offer new understandings about Taiwanese traditional temples for us.
