1. Description of Our Community
Taipei City, located in the north top of Taiwan, is a big city with 2,620,000 populations. The city has been set up for 120 years. The industry and commerce in Taipei has been highly developed. It is an important center of culture, economy and politics in Taiwan, too. Being a progressive international city, Taipei’s economy is flourishing, and business activities are all inclusive. It’s an international city and attracts a great deal of tourists to come a tour every year. Hotels and restaurants are standing in great numbers. The local delicacies are all over the city. Especially, the outdoor banquet is one of Taiwan’s famous food culture. Although the outdoor banquet in Taipei, a highly developed city, has declined gradually, there are a lot of head chefs working and passing down the career of the outdoor banquet as the heritage of food culture. Fortunately, the government now is promoting the culture of the outdoor banquet and making a sprint elevate the value of Taiwan’s sightseeing.
2. Summary of Our Project
In the closing ceremony of “2009 Deaf Olympics in Taipei”, the organizer treated contestants to the outdoor banquet. It was a successful party. All of the participants enjoyed the good food and wonderful atmosphere. It was impressive and evoked us to explore the history of the outdoor banquet in Taiwan. In the research, we focused on exploring the historical origins, the etiquette, and the customs of the outdoor banquet. We interviewed the famous chefs of the outdoor banquet and Tourism Bureau who told us how to promote the outdoor banquet as the product of sightseeing. The purposes of the research were to evoke people to recognize the food culture in Taiwan and to show the rich and passion of Taiwanese through the way of the outdoor banquet.

Our school provides ADSL for linking to internet with an upload speed of 100Mb and download speed of 100Mb. We have completed a wireless internet in 2004 and can receive the internet message in the campus everywhere. There are four computer classrooms and a multi-media center for making teaching materials in our school. In each computer classroom, there are 35 computers for the students to have the computer class. Also, the school provides every teacher a notebook for teaching use. The staff is more than 200 people. So, approximately, there are more than 350 computers in our school, including the computers for the administrative use. Every computer can use the wireless internet in the campus. The administrative departments still use the desktop computers which are provided with an exclusive line for connecting to internet, and various web services are available for application through the server. The school’s servers include Web Server, Mail Server, DNS Server and Proxy Server that provide convenient online application environment. Every student has his or her own E-mail address and has the capability of web making.
4. Problems We Had To Overcome
(1)Busy Students, Not Easy to Arrange the Schedule: Our team members were outstanding in many extra-curricula. They were the members of the Chinese orchestra, the chorus, the sport team and the language association, too. Our team members were always too busy to attend the research activities. Therefore, the scheduled progress of the research often got behind. We encouraged students to attend the research because they could learn a lot of knowledge and skills from the research, such as the skills of interview, interpersonal interaction and result presentation. (2)Not Familiar with Taiwanese: Our national language was Mandarin. Although we had the classes of mother tongue, such as Taiwanese, Hakka and Amis, it was still very difficult for the students to use Taiwanese to communicate with the head chef, Mr. Lin Tian-sheng. Since Mr. Lin Tian-sheng could speak Taiwanese only, we were obliged to ask our parents for help to translate the recondite slang and proverbs of Taiwanese into Chinese. Fortunately, our teacher, Miss Zou, and some of our parents were proficient in Taiwanese. Under their help, we completed the interview successfully. (3)The Outdoor Banquet, Meet by Chance: In the research, the most difficult challenge was to experience the outdoor banquet. In the beginning, we would like to ask our parents to put up capital to hold the outdoor banquet. But only the diners as us, the small homogeneous group, it was difficult to show the real atmosphere of vulgar, boisterous and bustling in the general outdoor banquet. In order to collect the information of the outdoor banquet, we dragged in lots of parents to write letters to ask where we could attend the activity of the outdoor banquet. In no time we were so lucky to know there was a community going to hold the outdoor banquet for celebrating the happy new year. At last, we got the chance to attend the outdoor banquet. (4)To Interview Minister Mao, Hard to Arrange the Time: Mr. Mao Zhi-Guo, Minister of Transportation Department, promoting the outdoor banquet as the top point of the sightseeing, was the subject person we had to interview. We had contacted with the staff for more than two months, but Mr. Minister was too busy to accept our interview. Finally, we interviewed Mr. Minister in the end of the semester. In order to economize the time, we asked two parents to type the sound files into the text
5. Our Project Sound Bite
We hope to preserve and glorify the unique way of food culture to develop the outdoor banquet as the marketing point of Taiwan’s sightseeing.
6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?
Using the topic of the outdoor banquet to teach the students who majored in the project, the research design would be organized as follows: 1.Language Realm: writing Interview Draft, reflection presentation, poetry composing, result presentation. 2.Art & Humanities: illustrations, background Music, comics. 3.Society Realm: caring for Taiwan. 4.Synthetic Activities: interview skills, persons interaction, experiencing. 5.Math Realm: information application, statistical charts.

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?
1. Recorder: during our interviews, paper notes with writing could not catch up so that we used a recorder to memorize the missed portion. 2. Digital camera: to record what we did and what we heard. The photos were also selected to be used in our web. 3. DVD Digital Video Recorder: to record what we did and what we heard in the video recorder with audio and video. It was a very good recording for our visit and interviews. 4. Mono-gun projector and physical projector: to project the images and photos on a screen for purpose of presentation. 5. Memory bar: for easy saving of data. 6. Scanner: to digitize the photos taken with traditional camera. 7. Internet: to search related photos, information, telephone numbers and addresses available online. 8. Computer software: (1) Microsoft XP. (2) Internet Explorer:to search web information. (3) PhotoImpact:to amend and cut digital photo. (4) ACDSee:to browse digital photo and to arrange the files of photos. (5) Microsoft Word:To write work schedule, wording report and research report. (6) Dreameaver:Web making. (7) E-pen:Drafting. (8) CPMagi6.0:Making posters, cards and envelops. 9. E-mail: to send digital information.
2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.
1. Watching the Movies: Before the interviews, we watched the chef’s cooking processing for the outdoor banquet through YouTube. It inspired us to be interested in the research. We drafted the research schedule and had a clearer research frame in our mind. 2. Interviews with Famous Persons: We interviewed Mr. Mao Zhi-Guo, Minister of Transportation Department, Chef A-Ding’s Shop in Song-Shan District, and the old chef, Mr. Lin Tian-Sheng. They received us friendly and professionally. We appreciated them who let the research go smoothly. 3. Questionnaires on the Street: In order to understand people’s points of view about the outdoor banquet, we designed the questionnaires to interview the citizens on the street. We had finished 150 pieces of questionnaires. It was really a splendid achievement. 4. Observation: Chef Guo Ming-Zong, the person in charge of Chef A-Ding’s Shop, was doing the outdoor banquet in Bishop Office. We were observing beside and serving the dishes. 5. Attending the Outdoor Banquet: With the help of our parents, we were going to attend the outdoor banquet in a community party. It was really a special experience to feel the festive atmosphere in the outdoor banquet. 6. The Interviews from the Press: When we were interviewing Mr. Mao Zhi-Guo, Minister of Transportation Department, we saw there were a lot of reporters coming to have coverage of the news. Some of us received the interview, too. In the next day, there were several the newspapers having the news report about the research of the outdoor banquet.
3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?
In and after the procedure of the research program, we began to pay attention to some customs and details of the outdoor banquet. We really had a favorable impression about the outdoor banquet. We hoped to promote Taiwan traditional food culture, the outdoor banquet, to the hot point of Taiwan’s sightseeing. Our project will be the impact on our community as follows: 1. The Outdoor Banquet: The outdoor banquet is a unique culture in Taiwan. It’s one kind of cooperation. In the process of preparing the outdoor banquet, you have to cooperate with others. It could be an activity with much benefit, and be the sightseeing point to make Taiwan famous. 2. Supply Chain:The material of the outdoor banquet is one kind of supply chain. No matter what the material is from the field or farm, these food would be on the chefs’ table and finally into the pots to be the gourmet cuisine on the table. It is a long kind of supply chain. The more we ask the outdoor banquet to be qualified, the better we look for the food materials to be. We would ask the food materials being conforming to the standard of non-toxic, natural, and organic. Therefore, the outdoor banquets would play certain roles on agriculture, fisheries, and logistics because the materials using in the outdoor banquets could have a great influence on the culture of animals and plants. 3. The Green Banquet: The food materials, such as fruits, vegetables and meats which we use on the outdoor banquets, are always seasonal materials. So we call the outdoor banquet as “the green banquet” which is helpful to environmental protection.
4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?
The local members provided assistance or voluntarily participated in the research program as follows: 1. Interviews: We interviewed, on the spot, Mr. Mao Zhi-Guo, Minister of Transportation Department, Chef A-ding’s Shop in Song-shan District, and the old chef, Mr. Lin Tian-sheng. They gave us great guidance and assistance. 2. Observing Opportunities: When Chef A-Ding’s Shop was doing the outdoor banquet in Bishop Office, they were so kind to allow us to observe beside. We knew the whole procedure of doing the outdoor banquet. In addition, we tasted the delicious dish of salad. 3. Questionnaires: We really appreciated Taipei citizens who helped us in completing the questionnaires. 4. The Opportunities to Experience: We were going to attend the outdoor banquet in the community party. All of the participants received us warmly. We enjoyed the outdoor banquet together and had a good time in the party. In and after the party, we took pictures and video. 5. Reports: When we were interviewing Mr. Mao Zhi-guo, Minister of Transportation Department, we saw there were a lot of reporters coming to have coverage of the news. Some of us received the interview, too. In the next, there were several news reports on the newspaper about the research of the outdoor banquet. It is a great propaganda for our research program.
5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)
1. Although the outdoor banquet had declined gradually in modern society, it didn’t disappear, in fact. Trough the quality control and creative activities, we believed it could be a distinguished feature of Taiwan’s food culture, and have the chance to be an important role in the international stage. 2. The outdoor banquet is very special. The food is delicious, the scene is fantastic, and the atmosphere is amazing. We really have a favorable impression about the outdoor banquet. 3. The outdoor banquet is a platform for the chefs to perform their cuisine. The old chefs have been passed down their cherished cuisine, and the young chefs have carried on the outdoor banquet in the way of specialization. 4. In the process of interviewing the chefs, we knew there were a lot of vivid slang and proverbs. Unfortunately, our Taiwanese was too bad to learn them.
