Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Kang Chiao Bilingual School is located in Shindian City Taipei County, Taiwan. The School strives to provide a bilingual, experimental and nature-loving environment for students to succeed in a global society. We encourage our teachers and students to take the challenge of climbing Yushan, long distance running, long distance swimming, and even triathlons. Up to now, many teachers and students have completed the Yushan climb and swum across Sun-Moon Lake.

2. Summary of Our Project

Yushan, or Jade Mountain, is the highest of the hundred mountains in Taiwan and the highest mountain in Northeast Asia. If you finish climbing it, you have conquered Yushan. Therefore, we have chosen the title “Conquering Taiwan’s Everest Mountain” for our topic. And our students get their graduation certificates from the principal at the top of Yushan. Therefore, we really have a “special graduation ceremony”.

The students work on their own web pages after class or school on their own, and the IT department also supports them and provides various assistances.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

A. Building a common consensus: Team members need to reach mutual understanding and the sense of responsibility in order to work together on the project. B. Seeking parental support: The research itself is very time and effort consuming. Therefore, an orientation targeting the parents is required to earn their support. C. Scheduling interviewees: Most interviews were done through emails, phone calls and personal contacts. D. Dictation and manuscript: Before and after the interviews, there were various kinds of editing and organization that need to be done. It was not only difficult but important. It also takes much patience and willpower to accomplish the task. E. Technical issues: Members need to learn digital editing and many other related techniques. They also need to work in smaller groups and discuss various issues to be able to put things together.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We have learned many things, like how to make web pages, how to organize articles... etc. The most important thing is teamwork, and students learn how to get along with others. Everyone in the team has its indispensable importance.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

A. Language: Writing, interviewing, and public speaking B. Math: Learning how to measure Yushan’s climbing distance C. P.E.: School hours mountain climbing. E. Liberal Arts: Learning basic computer skills: PhotoImpact 8, Photoshop, Photocap. F. Activities: Organizing and processing data (Team work) (a) Technology: Researching, collecting, processing and editing data and information. Sharing and communicating with group members. Keeping records. Saving data and information. Producing web pages. (b) Projects: Learning and using various research methods.

A. Phone & Email: Inviting and communicating with interviewee. Collecting information and photos of climbing Yushan. B. Internet: Collecting information of Yushan. C. Personal Computer: Processing and editing data. Producing web pages. D. Digital Video: Videotaping the interviews and physical training. E. Printer: Printing outlines, questionnaires, notification… etc. F. Flash Disk: Saving and keeping personal or temporary information. G.Digital camera: Keeping records of routine work and special moments. H. Voice recorder: Keeping records during interviews. G. Software: PhotoImpact 8, Namo 6, Ulead VideoStudio 8, Word 2003, FileZilla, IE…etc.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Decided to 'Climbing Yushan get graduation certificate ' as research contents, we have mounted one after another visit, will visit collate information in a chapter of articles published in the bulletin board outside the classroom and school sites. We participate many training, learning, and search for information on domestic & international websites, books and magazine, made into a special website: Conquering Taiwan's Everest Mountain-special graduation ceremony. We hope that through this site to tell more people, let everyone know our graduation students can climb Yushan and the activity, climbing Yushan get graduation certificate , can more popular.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Climbing Yushan is no longer a difficult sport, and it has become our school’s sport culture.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

A. Graduation students: Sharing experiences and first-hand information. B. School teachers: Let us have a clear understanding for climbing Yushan’s activity. C. Aple Lee: Providing photos and assisting to proofread articles for students. D. Kent Xu: Provideing movies and assisting to manufacture film editing for students. E. Mandy Hsieh’s mother: Assisting to proofread articles for children. F. Vivian Lin’s mother: Assisting to proofread articles for children.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Before we began our project, students thought that climbing Yushan was considered to be a boring and tiring activity. During the five months, we have gathered a lot of information and data. The activity of climbing Yushan has become meaningful to us. Our students who take part in this activity will be able to get graduation certificates from our principal at the top of Yushan.
