Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Cijin is an island of Kaohsiung City, surrounded with the sea. About 300 years ago, our descendents came here and earned their life by the sea, from one generation to the next. And this forms and shapes a marine culture of this place as well as the unyielding spirit to struggle with the sea. Cijin plays the role like a natural breakwater protecting the Kaohsiung Harbor from the waves. For the sake of national security, the southern part of Cijin Island was cut from the Kaohsiung land to construct a second harbor—and this makes Cijin become an island. Due to the traffic inconvenience, the phenomenon of the local residents who move to other places remains extremely serious. We hope that any constructions on the island may attract more visitors and renew the island’s glamour. However, one thing with which we feel extremely concerned is that the coastline is moving backwards with the wave’s erosion. For the recent decades, the coastline has already moved backwards for approximately 50 meters. We hope that everyone may take great care of the coastline through the activity of Cyber Fair.

2. Summary of Our Project

Cijin is the birthplace of Kaohsiung City. But with the time passing by, Cijin was a district (of Kaohsiung City) which was least developed. Whereas, after 1980s, the City Government were embarking on many constructions on this district and this makes the landscape of the district to become more beautiful. Now, it begins to shine, becoming the most popular tourist site in Kaohsiung City. In the weekends, many visitors come—and even the great numbers of vehicles coming from the Cross Harbor Tunnel makes the traffic of this area extremely heavy. As a member of Cijin, we have the responsibility and duty to introduce the most attractive and stunning tourist sites to each of us. Moreover, we hope that the beautiful scenery and delicious seafood may leave you a pleasant impression, and that you may have an intellectual tour to this place.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our school offers us 38 PCs with TI, printers, scanners and so forth. At the very beginning, we stored our data by Yahoo (Hong Kong) Group. But some technical problems occurred to Yahoo, many of our data couldn’t be downloaded. This made our schedule serious delay. Fortunately, Ms. Huang used another FTP and resolve the problems.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1.Time:At the very beginning, we didn’t know that the project is due on Feb. 24, 2010, and thus, we didn’t push ourselves to make it done as soon as possible. We have to use the noon-break time to design the webpage. We have 45 minutes at noon, but, with some classmates who come late and who have to do some school chores, we have less than 40 minutes. Worse, some other study groups were using computer classroom, even when the winter vacation came. Moreover, some classmates have to leave earlier for their supplementary school, so time is no doubt an enormous difficulty for use to conquer. 2.Data:The topic for this project is our hometown, Cijin. It is not a big place, but it indeed takes us lots of time to take pictures from one place to the other, and interview the senior local residents. Plus, we take the bike to take pictures and this indeed consumes lots of our energy. And in the weekends, there are many tourists—and for the sake of safety—we can hardly take any good pictures. Even though the series of tasks are exhausting and time-consuming, I believe that everything’s worthwhile if the pictures will help promote Cijin. 3.Techniques:The software for this project is Dreamweaver, not Namo, the one which is offered in our computer class. So we have to adjust many problems. What’s more, there is only one computer teacher in our school, and she couldn’t possibly have sufficient time to guide all of the group members. So we have to wait to instruct other members after teacher’s demonstration. 4.Progress:Some of our classmates couldn’t make themselves come early to the computer classroom, and so our progress couldn’t be further put forward without their presence—and our project would fall far behind schedule. Fortunately, some worked harder as to meet the schedule and the data will be much more organized. 5.Experience:All of us didn’t have the experience of making a homepage—and we didn’t know where to begin. Fortunately, our computer teacher was quite patient to guide each of us, and then we were beginning to have a general picture of this project. I think we all have to work harder. We have to practice more to have more experiences about the technical skills of the homepage design. And I hope we will not feel at a loss when in front of the computer screen.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

1.Data Group:When our teacher announced us the topic for this project, there is a stream that went over the hearts of all my group members—We have to do it well! Though we stayed positive to ourselves, some problems occurred and then fortunately were resolved—we still headed forward the topic, “Let’s Hit the Road to Cijin by Bike.” Through this project, we know this place more, we know the knowledge of this place more, and we know the people here more. One interesting thing is that when we were asking to have a picture with an owner of shop, he replied: “Wait a minute! I got to make my hair tidy!” (actually, ha, ha, his hair is getting bald) I think it is the local Cijin resident’s passion that makes this place so lovely and so touching. However, the people who come to Cijin are getting more and more, so is the pollution—and this makes us quite worried about this! We really hope that we can, through the activity of Cyber Fair, promote this place with a new introduction. 2.Artistic Editing:In the first meeting, Ms. Huang asked us to choose a group they like and are good at. So I then chose the Artistic Editing Group. At the outset, I thought it was some sort of simply drawing, or re-editing some pictures, but it was more than what I could imagine—such as the animation of the homepage, site map, small pictures for the landmark, each members pictures and so forth. What is more, these are never an easy task! I got to be very concentrated on each step; if something slight …

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Language Arts Area

Chinese---We can talk more with the senior residents, who are truly like an historical book accounting many stories. We have to record and organize their talk. We, moreover, have to paraphrase their talk or narrations with our own style in order to reinforce our own ability to write and express. We believe that that will help our future, either for job or for exams. English---We can commonly see many foreign visitors coming to Cijin, and the 2009 World Game has no doubt highlighted the visibility of Cijin. So, we have to practice English more. If any foreigners get lost in Cijin, we can be an earnest guide to have a good visit around Cijin.

Social Studies

Geography---Familiar with the geographical environment and transportation, we can arrange the itinerary. With our knowledge with the historical progress, we know how to improve the environmental condition. Also, we may remind any visitors where to be more careful. Ex: 1) Our school guide students to clean the beach; 2) For several years ago, one of the students released the Green Turtle; 3) The rise of sea level and the moving backwards of the coastline; 4) The myriads of visitors bring about not only the good effect (such as the economic incomes) but also the bad effects (such as the environmental pollutions); 5) The heavy traffic severely bring much inconvenience to the local residents.

History---We are aiming to elucidate the historical development of Cijin Island from her past to her present, such as the development of the relics, temples, and the architectures. The negative side of the historical events may serve as a moral lesion, and the positive side may, of course, set a good example for all of us. Science and Technology

Information Technology Education---We use the software to search for the information needed, organize and modify the pictures, and then we make our own webpage. We use the Internet to make people find the website we made. Earth Sciences---We may understand more about the geographical environment through the impact of the ocean. Ex: 1) We can observe the sediment from the sea by water sampler; 2) We pay a visit to YM Museum of Marine Exploration to understand more information on the modern marine technology and the marine ecology. 3) We make the best use of the existing “Marine Classroom” to guide students to understand any problems about the ocean. Arts and Humanities---We participate in any artistic activity about the …

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Each teachnique is quite valuable indispensable for us. If without the computer and the software, we can hardly design or edit the homepage; if without the digital camera, we can hardly have any pictures or records; if without the bike, we can hardly have more complete information. If without the Internet, we can hardly have the immediate information; if without Ms Huang’s guidance, we can hardly have a clear direction; if without the esprit de corps, we can hardly have a center; if without any moral lessons, we can hardly stay positive; if without encouragement, we can hardly have any motivation. Our thanks go to those who offer their information. If without your help, this work can hardly be done!

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

As a member of the local citizen, we are the ambassador of Cijin—and we have some responsibility for her. For example, this school guided the students to participate in any activity about the ocean, such as the measurement of the beach, the sediment observation, beach cleaning, and, more interestingly, the release of the Green Turtle. Moreover, any equipment required is offered by this school. We can, from these activities, know more, learn more, and understand more. We were born and grow on the land surrounded by the sea, and our teacher will bring me to the seashore if there is any knowledge about the ocean mentioned in the textbook. By so doing, we will know the ocean more; we will feel more close to the ocean more. And the ocean may sometimes instruct and inspire us with some moral lessons.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

However, the information will not simply there; we have to go to many places to collect the information. Sometimes we used the eighth class to take pictures, but we couldn’t do it well because of the limit of time. So we have to take pictures on the weekend instead. Sometimes my bike got broken; I had to fix it all by myself—this is quite helpless! This is no doubt a serious situation when my bike got broken outside. All I can do is fix it by myself. So we sometimes have to catch up with the schedule on the weekend.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The topic for this contest is rather advantageous for us, I think. All of us are the local residents. Many things have been constantly heard and told since my childhood—even though some of the information still needs further verification and evidence. So we may have to ask the local residents, my neighbors, or any elderly people. The chairperson (Mr. Tsai) and teacher (Ms. Huang) constantly discuss with us and offer us a broader and deeper thought. And then all are done by all of us.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Making the homepage requires many pictures and pieces of information. However, the information will not simply there; we have to go to many places to collect the information. Sometimes we used the eighth class to take pictures, but we couldn’t do it well because of the limit of time. So we have to take pictures on the weekend instead. Sometimes my bike got broken; I had to fix it all by myself. So this will reduce out time of collecting the information. The distribution of tasks should be fairly done and each member should try his/her best to meet the schedule. Each member has to participate in the project all-heartedly, or, the sweet fruit will never, I deeply believe, be easily achieved. We all have to constantly ask and remind ourselves to meet the schedule within the limited time. Or, we can hardly have the least prize of it.
