Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Tubod is a second class municipality in the province of Lanao del Norte and Iligan City. It has a total land area of 240 square kilometers and having a density of 183. 72 km 2. It has latitude of 8.054 and a longitude of 123.791. With its Land area, the municipality is divided into 24 barangays. The Municipality of Tubod has a non- seasonal climate. Rainfalls occur throughout the year. The heaviest precipitation occurs from May to December with an average of 7 inches per month and a lesser precipitation occurs from January to April with an average of 3 inches per month. The average yearly rainfall is 60 inches and the average temperature is 80 degrees Fahrenheit scale. The tropical climate in the area makes it very good for planting banana making the market profitable and worthy of investment. Different agricultural products such as coconut, banana, rice, corn among other were produced in this locality. The strong and brave people of Tubod inherited the bounty of resources because these people are generally hard working and have the passion of farming. Evidence shows that the farmers in this area planted banana, corn, peanuts, to name a few under the shade of the coconut trees. The nutrient cycling and soil fertility accounts the higher yields of the agricultural crops in this area.

2. Summary of Our Project

Tubod, Lanao del Norte is one of the productive municipalities of Lanao del Norte. The municipality is known for its significant copra and banana production. Coconut production is the primary source of income of the people of Tubod. To increase the income of the coconut farmers in this area, the farmers engaged in planting different varieties of banana. The municipality agriculturists state that due to the multi-cropping practices with different varieties of banana, it reduces the incidence of disease occurrence of banana. Having banana as the second crop produced by farmers in the municipality, many investors have transactions through the exportation of the products. The different bananas being produced were then sold to market and stores. This study analyzes the production and exportation of bananas in the municipality. It understands the business from that may affect the economy in the municipality. This introduces the place’s abundance of bananas and their ways of producing it.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our school is equipped with 2 computer classroom. Not all the school computers are connected to internet. The campus internet is a regional internet work where resources from each computer are shared.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

a. Power Failure: During the process of making the website, the power went out several times because of the decreasing of water levels in Lanao Lake which is the primary source of hydroelectric energy in our place. b. Lack of Internet Access: Internet Access is very limited in our city. Most of the member’s do not have internet access at home. So it’s very hard to collect information for the improvement of our entry. c. Difficulty in Facilitating Meetings: Most of the members are busy in other extra- curricular activities such as mangrove planting and camping, because of this, it is hard to find time to gather our members and make a plan in our entry.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

This study also is a way of promoting the banana exportation in the municipality of Tubod, Lanao del Norte as well as encourage investors in supplying the products of banana.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Tubod is the provincial capital of Lanao del Norte, located in the Northern Mindanao area along the Northern Western Coast. The place is surrounded by mountains and most of its land areas are used for agriculture. Tubod is fit for all kinds of crops and one of its major agricultural products are the bananas. Banana is considered as the most important fruit crop in the country in terms of volume of production and export earnings. It also contributes not only to the national income but also to employment.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

The group used computers and computer software like Macromedia Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Word, Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Excel for the data compilation, editing and designing of webpage, and uploading the data. Digital cameras were used for the documentation of the images of the products as well as the group tasks. Oral interviews were also made to the most valuable persons specially the agriculturists of the municipality for the group to know the amount of production of banana in Tubod. Different statistical tools were utilized to validate the formulated regression model of banana production. The group also used internet connection for searching some data and looking for some examples of the cyberfair winners. It is also used for in inquiring the webpage and uploading it.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Being a business related project, the information we mostly need are those types without immediate access or information in which you need to ask special permission in order to gain access to these information. In order to get this information, we went to ask the necessary persons personally for permission to get the information. We had to travel for an hour to reach the agriculturist and farmers of Lanao del Norte in order to persuade them that our project is for the improvement and promotion of the banana industry in the place. We had to approach them personally for the improvement of the project.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The municipality of Tubod is known for their great production of banana considered as their second crop. By conducting this study, many people would be able to know how large the production and exportation of banana is. Also, the community will be more popularized due to its great production of bananas. This study may help farmers and the capitalist in the projection of the annual banana production. It is important because the supply and demand of banana fruits can be considered as one of the determining factors of the economy. Moreover, the publication of this project website will promote the unfamiliar varieties of banana to be in the market.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We appreciate the effort by our teacher in Chemistry/Advance Research and also our class adviser, Mrs. Susan C. Unde, for giving us the knowledge, patience and trust for this project. We would also like to thank Mr. Paul Lesondra for assisting us in the webpage designing. Without the classmates, friends and school personnel who shared their ideas, time and things/gadgets they lend to us to improve and to finish the project as soon as we expected. Once again, we would like to extend our gratitude to this people. Without them, this project will be unproductive.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Lanao del norte is one of the promising municipalities of the Phillipines that produces banana. It is also the only place where varieties are grown. With our group assign to the place, we learn a lot about its business regarding with the fruit. It seems that there are about 30 kinds of banana being sold to the market and Tundan, Cardava, and Lakatan are the one produce in high quantity for its high demand. There are about 1875.25 hectares being used for the plantation even though it is only second to coconut. The people celebrate an annual Sagingan festival where the different varieties of banana were displayed and were introduced.
