Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

“Kaohsiung”, a large industrial city in south, and it’s also the one of important cities in Taiwan.

It was not until the Japanese Colonial Period did Kaohsiung due to its large ports and Cross-Island Railway’s growing importance. It underwent transformation from agriculture-based to industrial and commercial after the introduction of heavy industries and the prototype of a port-based industrial city took its form.

After the Nationalist government moved to Taiwan, along with the establishment of the export processing zones as well as the Ten Major Infrastructure Projects, Kaohsiung’s industrial development peaked and its many factories created employment opportunities, which resulted in a huge influx of population from other counties and cities. As Kaohsiung City’s population density reached saturation, its developments were extended in surrounding towns and townships. Kaohsiung along with several neighboring administrative districts made up “Metropolitan Kaohsiung.”

“Kaohsiung County - Fongshan city - 'Wei Wu Ying' Park”

The Wei-Wu Military Camp is located at the junction of Kaohsiung County and Kaohsiung City in Southern Taiwan. To the east of the Camp is Fengshan City, Kaohsiung County and to the west of it is Lingya District, Kaohsiung City. And as the Camp is located at the junction of the city and county, the environment is less subject to damage due to urban development.

As for its surrounding, the density of population here is very high. Therefore, the existence of this park is essential for bettering living conditions.

2. Summary of Our Project

The Wei-Wu-Ying (Wei Wu Military Camp) Park Campaign marked the beginning of the Green Revolution in the South. With the environmental groups as the focus, along with the public opinions and academic and local government agencies that voice for the local environmental issues to be heard in the Central Government, the agenda is to reserve the green resources of The Wei-Wu-Ying and its land use rights.

The importance of the park is evident after understanding the environment and historical backgrounds. Some of the influential factors include: urban environment, industrial development and pollution, population and industrial structure, and so on.

In the course of the Wei-Wu-Ying Campaign, a rational and peaceful atmosphere is clearly projected. And from the details of the process, we may gain an insight into the organizational makeup, mode of operation, and more importantly, the central ideology that led to the comprehensive ongoing campaign and the purpose and outcome achieved which ultimately set a good example for later environmental movements.

In addition to personnel operation throughout the campaign, there must be ideological connotations from dreams to ideals, from ideals to ideas, and finally putting the ideas into action. The intrinsic values and thoughts have an impact on the movement itself; therefore, the core value of the Wei-Wu-Ying Campaign lies in understanding it.

Besides the focus, the campaign’s influence on the general concepts is even more profound. The value of the “green” no longer exists only among sports groups; it is promoted through the realization of the outcomes to achieve the social and educational results. The formulation of the intangible ideas has a greater impact as compared to a green revolution on the environment in which the promotion of environmental protection, greening, and landscaping is taken one step further to a broader and deeper meaning!

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The biggest problem we faced was the lack of language (English writing) ability, we can't express our meaning very correctly and directly in English. At beginning, we can only describe something basic, so most articles on WebPages were translated by professionals and our English teachers. But we still tried hard to write some part(ex: Narrative) of this project in English by ourselves. Finally, we benefited greatly by trying and learning how to write in English in the process of project!

5. Our Project Sound Bite

First. Be concerned with our environment actively and unite to fight for beautiful future life !

Second. “We want change! It is in human nature to love and care,” that is, the green groups wish to change the Kaohsiung residents to come and care for their land.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our project fit into the “Local culture” curriculum and humanist care. Particularly, the main idea about environment improving and social values inspiring are suit with the topic of Cyberfair 2010-” Believe and Unite!” All in all, the concept-Green Dream- played an inportant role in pushing the progress of citizens’ sense of environmen. We can see that the group which started the movement realized democratic negotiation and put their plan into practice. These conditions support International Schools CyberFair project content standards, required coursework and curriculum requirements.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We completed our project with some technologies and tools as the list follow : 1. Computers. We used them to collect information and edit website; in addition, they could help us connect each other (among teammate and teachers), when we couldn’t have a discussion face to face. 2. Internet and E-mail. Without these two technologies, we couldn’t communicate immediately and exchange our thoughts and files so fast. 3. Recorder. It helped us record the conversations with interviewee. With its help, we could repeat time after time, when writing the essays and bringing up the main points. 4. Digital Camera. We also took lots of pictures in order to show the views of Wei Wu Ying and the surroundings. Digital camera is convenient to take pictures and output them. 5. Computer Software. In the process of setting up the website, we took advantage of some software, such as Words2007, Frontpage2003 and Photoimpact12. They made our works excellent. 6. Libraries, Books, Newspapers. There are abundant references including journals, newspapers, books and papers in our “Bibliography” page. We understant the background of our research by collecting data from library. The most important one is the “Timeline” which consisted of plenty of newspapers, and it’s used to show the events which happened during “Wei Wu Ying” park movement. Although it really took us much time to put these references in order, we still thought it’s valuable and meaningful! 7. Oral Interviews. It’s crucial for us to have an “Oral Interview” because most part of content was originated from interviews. We found that books and references couldn’t provide us sufficient information we need, so interviews became the key of us to obtain enough firsthand information.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Through the questionnaires we spread on-line, many people realized more about “Wei Wu Ying” at the first time, besides we also interviewed people in the front of “WWY Park” to know what kinds of activities they do here. While we attend the “Lai Ho” national humanism award, our topic-Green Revolution in the South- was presented to many professors and students. They approved and encouraged us to continue our project. We want more people to know this issue and the values in this peaceful and successful movement, that is the reason why we attend International Cyberfair 2010. It’s because we hope that people on earth could dream the Green Dream together !

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

This project enabled more residents to realize the social movement. People including us can learn about the belief that led to a significant improvement in our community. Accordingly, numerous dwellers were inspired and wanted to strive for the better environment. As more and more people knew the project, we are convinced that the project could not only activate us to devote ourselves to the conviction which benefits our circumstances but also teach us to stick to the end if we want to make our dream come true.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

There are many people who helped us during our project : Mr. Tseng Guihai, Mr. Lu Youyi, Mr. Lin Chaohao, Mr. Li Desheng, etc. They represented different standspots and gave us many constructive comments and important information. Without their kindly helps, we could not present the website and the invaluable histroy. In addition, there are groups of people who filled out our questionnaire, whose precious opinions about “WWY” also helped us a lot. Although we didn’t contact with all people who were involved in “WWY park movement”, we still thank for their contributions to our community and environment!

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

The power of a firm dream can really make a difference. “Green Dream” was just originated from the consideration for environment, but it could turn out to be a practiced movement and bring positive improvement into reality. The most essential conception which inspired us a lot from this project is that only by keeping positive attitude and working continuously will we accomplish whatever we believe in eventually.

We were also surprised when we had an interview with Mr. Tsun. In the beginning, we imaged him as a stern and serious person because he was such a great leader and revolutionist of this social movement. However, after thorough conversation with him, we were all attracted by his temperament. We could feel the passion and enthusiasm when he discribed the process of striving for the “WWY Park”, especially the frustrations they faced.

We understood intensely that to be the person who wanted to change, make pregress and end up realizing his dream was not an easy thing. It’s apparent that the sense of purpose and endeavors made up the revolutionary breakthrough in the end and intrigued the following movement.
