Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

We live in Singapore, and in order to the save our precious Mother Earth, we, Singaporeans also did not forget our respective duties in contributing to this. We had been planning many actions to control greenhouse gas emission, causing the problem, which is Global Warming. This is to let the international community understand what Singapore is doing to stabilize the climate and work for a better future.

We are also taking precautions to prevent many illnesses such as Dengue Fever, SARS and other kinds of diseases. This will help our citizens to lead a better life.

2. Summary of Our Project

We are 2 teammates, as well as classmates-Yi Xiang and Xian Cheng. We joined this Doors to diplomacy competition is because we hope to educate people to stop global warming, protecting endangered animals and preventing them from becoming extinct and also, not forgetting about our health.

As I had some knowledge in HTML, I did most of the webpage designing and also, gathering and putting information together. Of course, Xian Cheng did help me out in this. He was in charge of designing some pictures as he has some skills in Adobe Photoshop © and as well as Adobe Flash ©.

Thus, our project aims to allow a greater population to understand about the threats our Mother Earth and wildlife faces. It also provides a guide to healthy lifestyle and prevention of illnesses.

What lead us to having the chance of taking part in this was also because of our teachers. They were Mrs Chiang Fong Kwan, Mrs Lim Ai Tee, Mrs Tong Hwai Ping and Mrs Sabar. They also helped solve some of our problems during the process of making this webpage. We are really thankful to them as they guide us in making this webpage a successful one!

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:none

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:1

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our school provides wireless infrastructure so that to let the students who have a laptop, notebook or tablet PC enjoy the Wireless Local Area Network almost everywhere in the school. We also have the Tablet PC program in our school. We have three computer rooms with Windows XP to provide sufficient computers for our students.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The challenging problem we had to overcome was the time constraints. We only had about 2 weeks period of time before the deadline for submission. Additionally, we had only 2 people in our group. At that point of time, we were having our tests as well, which made us have lesser time for this project.

This caused us to have to do more work, and in the end resulting in inconveniences and also sometimes, difficulties. One other challenge was that both of us were amateurs in webpage designing.

Luckily, some of our fellow seniors and teachers offered help to help us in some of our difficulties and solved our problems!

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Though we didn’t know much about greenhouse effect and some endangered wildlife species before this, but after this CyberFair, we have gradually gained some knowledge about this. Besides understanding that global warming is intensifying, we need to pay attention to environmental protection and conserve energy. We must and have to care for our sick Mother Earth to let it recover earlier, or we will be the ones to suffer. Our health may also deteriorate because of this. Besides this, we will also lose many animals and plants on the verge of extinction. Because of human destruction, Earth’s valuable natural resources are rapidly diminishing. After a short period of about 2 weeks, researching, and working together with my teammate, fellow seniors and mentors, I’ve learned a lot, and it was also enjoying throughout the process, so it was worth it.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Reducing the global warming, as well as illnesses and diseases have been the goal of every government and country. This important international matter is a must that elementary students need to know. Through the lessons, students get to know the disastrous effects of global warming, understand the reason behind abnormal climates and the rising temperature all over the world, which cause melting ice caps. It also teaches them the causes of certain illnesses and how to prevent them.

This will lead people to having a more comfortable lifestyle and also, throughout this project, we have learnt certain issues that we can not learn in our textbooks and workbooks.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Due to our tight schedule , we brought each of our personal laptop to school, which is fully-wireless, and work on this project during non-academic periods. Using the Internet, we looked for information and also answers to solving some difficulties which we faced throughout the whole project.

As for the website design, my team-mate, Xian Cheng, applied his skills of Photoshop © into this project and successfully edited some nice pictures.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We plan to promote to the students of NanHua High School, and then following by promoting this to other schools. We hope that thay can spread the message to their fellow friends and relatives, allowing more people to know about our project and learn about our environment and our health. As for acting as on-line ambassadors, we are interested in creating a forum which relates to our topic and thus, allowing people from all around the world to post their questions and discuss there.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

As this is the first time our club has taken part in this Doors to diplomacy competition, it have definitely arouse curiosity among both our juniors and seniors. This may lead to them having an interest in taking part next time. Our school have also acquired more knowledge about the environment and health issues.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

As my team is not very good at webpage uploading, my fellow seniors and teachers offered to teach me about the basics of it,while doing this project. I would like to thank them , who is James and Mrs Chiang for their time and effort they put in to teach me some skills which I've not acquired before. Also, I hope to thank my whole Club in helping me completing this webpage!
