Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our community: Great Nanao, the ancient name of Nanao, is a place composed of chains of lofty mountains, and a place that tends to be forgotten on maps. It is really hard to imagine that how the aborigines first reached such an outlying place in mountains of Eastern Taiwan. It is located 25 kilometers south of the last pass of Kamalan Hall in Suao, and is located 25 kilometers north of Sinchen, the northernmost village of Hualien. It is a place of mystery and no Han Chinese would like to reside here. The exploratory history of Nanao was started by James Horn’s first exploitation of wood and building of castles. Ta-chuen Luo was the second person to exploit Nanao and built the Peilu Temple here. An English explorer, James Horn, led his homeless fellows of Kamalan to Nanao, and started to exploit this Arcadia secluded from the world. Horn built his own castles and kingdom here, where the story of Nanao began…

2. Summary of Our Project

This project focuses on the developmental history, geographical environment, cultures, landscapes, and ecology of Naoao region in Yilan, and describes the exploratory history of Nanao. We investigated the development history and natural ecology of the area to preserve the precious culture and ecological records of Nanao, and present the most authentic and first-hand information about Nanao to people around the world. Through rational and sentimental viewpoints, it also provides references to the controversy on the construction of Suhua Highway.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Collecting data is the biggest headache to us. As Major Nanao is remote and lately developed, the official data about it is inadequate. With the instructions from our teachers, we visited Institute of I-lan History for a several times and finally found a lot of valuable information.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

1. Spirit of innovation. 2. Local culture heritage. 3. Spirit of unity and cooperation. 4. Webpage presentation skill.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

On the Field of Science and Technology : During the process of research, we wielded products of modern technological science, such as digital cameras, voice pens, personal computers, scanners, and broadband networks. We also learned and knew how to use the software of web pages designing, and finished our paper by coordinating interviews on the spot and questionnaires. Contacting and sending notices by E-mails and utilizing the network to transmit the arranged data are much better than the traditional ways. Besides, what is great is that our ability of web pages designing was strengthened insidiously that would be of great help to the lifelong study in the future.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Computer Software : for Example. Flash Mx ? Dreamweaver MX ? PhotoImpact 10.0 ? Microsoft Word ? Microsoft Excel ? Microsoft Visio ? cuteFTP

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We were welcome by the warm-hearted folks in Nanao Region. In addition to their active cooperation in interviews and investigation, most of them even provided their life stories and took part in the study. As for environmental issues, most of them were not interested, except for a few opinion leaders; and most were unfamiliar with the concept of ecological conservation. For example, the sealing off rivers to prevent fishing was not effective and the indifference to the high voltage power towers of the people on the plain. It is hoped that we can provide accurate information and concepts to the people there through this study to preserve the ecological environment and scenic views forever.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

During the research process, due to the perseverance and argumentative spirit, we managed to discover the venue of James Horn settlement incident in Major Nanao. As the place is scarcely populated and the migrants came later than the settlement, even the local seniors did not know the incident. We adventured to climb the mountain on foot deep into shrubs and grasses to discover the location of the fortress. We even discovered and recorded stone wall relics of the fortress. For the past a few months, we learnt many topics relating to culture, history and ecology and we got the once in a life time experience. This first hand discovery is the biggest contribution we made in this project. Of course, to avoid damage, we took photos only and kept them in archive for professional departments to study in detail.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Another problem arising from this research was that most of the team members cannot speak Taiwanese dialect, resulting in a lot of inconveniences in the summary of interview documents. Thanks to the local warm-hearted people and the parents, the interview was accomplished smoothly.
