Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Like a shining pearl, Huinong District is located in the northest of Ningxia Hui Nationality Autonomous Region. There are three countries and three towns in the district with the whole area of 1088 square kilometers and the whole population of 209 thousand. In February 2004, the State Council annulled the former Huinong County and Shizuishan District and established Huinong District. With the unique natural resources such as mountains and rivers, as well as No. 110 and 109 National Highway, all the towns and 88% of the villages have roads of asphalt. The system of communication in Huinong District connects with many other places. There are three power plants. The construction of infrastructure has been greatly improved: the systems of water, heating and gas are rather complete. There are 888.7 thousand mu of farmland in the whole area, in which 260 thousand has been planted. There are nearly 150 thousand mu of uncultivated land to be developed.

2. Summary of Our Project

Huinong Middle School is a boarding school in the northest village of Ningxia. The number of the staff is 109 and there are more than 1500 students. Our school has trained and brought up a lot of good students and they are all over the whole Autonomous Region since the establishment in 1964. All the people graduated from our school never forget their junior high school and their teachers. The main topic of our research is on an experienced teacher who has witness the development of our school. It is also he that makes the contribution to the development of our school. Many of his contemporaries have retired, but he is still working hard to teach his students and is called “the evergreen tree in the teaching field”. We want our students to contact Mr. Li and learn from him. Through the activity, we also learn how to communicate and trust each other. Although we have encountered a lot of difficulties, we also reap the benefits of it. Our activity is also supported by the leaders of our school, as well as the teachers, the parents of the students, the family members and students of Mr. Li. We hope more people can get a better understanding of Huinong Middle School through our web.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The details of the difficulties Although the students like interviewing, they should study at school, so there is a problem to arrange their time to interview. The safety of the students is the most important in the activity. However, the interviews are often arranged provisionally. Although the students are quite interested in the research, they are not enthusiastic for the sorting out of materials and typing. Due to the much time spent on the sorting out of materials, there is not enough time for web designing. The school attaches great importance to the studying of students, so the students do not have enough time to design web. How to solve The teachers interview and record and arrange time to discuss with the students. We try our best to make plans on the time schedule of interview in advance. The teachers explain to the students that the soring out of materials is the most important in the research. We ask the professionals for help. The teachers communicate with the leaders of the school and prevent students from taking part in some unnecessary activities.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

In this activity, what impresses me most is the nobility of Mr. Li. In the modern times, most people seek after the success in material life. However, Mr. Li is just the opposite. He has dedicated most of his time and energy to his teaching for the past decades. He loves teaching and his students, which makes us deeply moved by him

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Through the activity, I have also learned how to arrange my time, or I will have difficulty how to spend time on studying and in the activity. I should work harder than others to do more. The more we sow, the more we get. I love my hometown Ningxia, as well as everything here. Each simple act stands for our love of the hometown. More importantly, as the students in the modern times, we should work hard now and make our own contributions to the development of Ningxia in the future.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Internet Environment There is an optical fibre of 10M in our school and 50 computers in the computer room that can used by students to surf online. And other offices of our school can also connect with Internet. The management center of Internet of our school provides us with a server to store some materials. Of all the ten students in our team, there are two students who have computers at home and can connect with the Internet

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

With the interviewing as the main tasks in our research, we not only contact them by telephone but also by E-mail. Through the interviews, we also know some people and let them have a better understanding of our research. Two teachers in our team teach information technology, both of whom have their own computers, so the students can search and sort out some materials with the help of these two teachers. Although most of the students in our team are in Grade Three in junior high school and are busy with their study, they still try their best to find time to take part in the activity and reap the benefit of it. The difficulties we have encountered and overcome are as follows: Although it is the second time for us to take part in the activity, they still lack experiences and our mind is not so broad, so the web we design is not so satisfactory. However, we also learn from the activity that as long as we have worked, there is no difficulty that we cannot overcome.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Teacher is like the spring of life. Teacher is like a light in the darkness. Teacher is enginer of the soul of human beings. I don't quite understand these sentences before, but now after I become the student of Mr. Li, I have a better understanding of these sentences. His seriousness of his work and his unselfishness of his students can hardly be found on other people. Mr. Li has been the teacher for thirty-eight years. In the past decades, he has always took his work seriously and treated his students as his own children. He has dedicated all his time and energy to the teaching cause. Although he is old now, he is still full of vigor. It is our Mr. Li. All of our team members agree to make researches on him. In the modern times, the purpose of the education today is to train students ability to express their gratitude, their ability to organize activities and their sense of responsibility. With the research topic of a figure in our hometown, we are aimed at improving the students’ ability such as planning, data collection, interviewing, questionnairing and web designing. Through this activity, we hope the students can show a positive attitude towards life and the world. We can the activity as a good opportunity to let students collect materials and sort out relevant materials, all of which have a profound influence on them and stimulate them to make their own contribution to the hometown.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Two teachers in our team teach information technology, both of whom have their own computers, so the students can search and sort out some materials with the help of these two teachers. Although most of the students in our team are in Grade Three in junior high school and are busy with their study, they still try their best to find time to take part in the activity and reap the benefit of it.
