Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our country, Kaohsiung, is full of sunshine, located in south Taiwan, and is the second metropolitan center in Taiwan, which is a well-known significant place for industrial, commerce and ocean capital. There is a convenient transportation system, and is full of shops good for developing Taiwan's national sports competition. “2009 World Games in Kaohsiung” is not only the greatest activity in the athletic area, but also the honor and pride of athletic activity as a Kaohsiung citizen. Kaohsiung can get valuable opportunity taking charge of the “World Games” through two-years of hard-working cooporation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Athletic Committee. Not only does this pushing Kaohsiung into the world, but also activates the Kaohsiung citizen to love sports and build a metropolitan city that loves health and sports vitality.

2. Summary of Our Project

“Tchoukball”is the competition activity of the World Games in 2009, and active promoting item for Civil Game in that year. Tchoukball is not only safe ball exercise, but is also an entertainment activity for any age . You may enjoy playing ball on cement , grass, or even beach. The big difference between Tchoukball and other ball competition is the focus on the spirit of “courtesy.” During competition, everyone has to learn respect and be considerate with each other. The competition of physical activity with harmony circumstance by encouraging rivals is a worthwhile Civil Game.

We choose the suitable sports item of Tchoukball for Chinese figure as our research topic. We do hope people may get a basic knowledge about Tchoukball through our monographic research, and develop the sport at school, community and all organization to initiate civil exercise. Everybody, come scramble for the ball together!

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

[School] There are two computer classrooms and 80 computers offered for students at our school. All researchers can have internet access, find the data, and print the documents at the computer classrooms.

[Home] All researchers are using internet access of ADSL, e-mail box of school, internet hard disk, and webpage of class after school to continue researching work by finding the data and conveying the file.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

[Time and Transportation of Interviewing People] The main point of the research is interviewing the teachers who are training the Tchoukball players, Tchoukball representative players and coaches of all counties of Civil Game. It's very hard to find a good time to interview them, because they have to work or compete. Every researcher has to use the morning to interview, but they have to take the regular class. Luckily, the teachers of regular class would rather send them out to interview, as long as they hand in homework later.

[Researching Time is not Enough] The eleven researchers scattered into different classes of sixth grade, we only can meet each other at our gifted class (three times a week). It's so hard to find the good time to research together, so we use the morning before all classes or lunch time to go to the computer room to finish our research. But there are one or two researchers who can't come with us sometimes. We are going to enter junior high school, the schoolwork s becomes more and heavier, the progress is slow and the homework isn't finished. Teachers will discuss the progress and allocate the works after class, and researchers encourage each other, we will deal with the difficulties to accomplish our job.

[The Problem of Data Allocation] Because of the limitation of Tchoukball competition and data of rule, we spent a lot of time to collect and compile it. Before making a webpage, we categorized the webpage into Tchoukball lecture, Kaohsiung promotion activity, research diary, and happiness of playing ball, and then we started compiling and collecting data according to each items. For example, we classified “Tchoukball lecture” into Tchoukball history, playing rule, and skill of getting point, and two of us to be a group to find the information. The immense data became orderly.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

It's a rare opportunity that “World Games” held in Kaohsiung once every four years. The Athletic Committee promotes elementary school of Kaohsiung to recognize other competing countries and competing item. The Tchoukball our school recognized is topic. After Cyberfair, we know more about information of Tchoukball and learn its spirit and characters.

During the process of researching, teacher Wei-Guo Zhu and Qi-Ci Zheng sacrificed their leisure time to teach us Tchoukball skills and referee's gestures. President Mu-Chuan Xiao taught us interest of Tchoukball, his specialty, and knowledge, we can know more about Tchoukball history. Teacher Jien-Cheng Huang told us Tchoukball developing in international and in Taiwan for three hours.

At the competition of Civil Game, we accidentally interviewed the national representative team, Coach Shen-Si Fang, and the players. They told us their experience and happiness and suffering, and their expectancy of getting medals. In addition, we learn how to cooporate. we want to say “Thank You” to everyone who was involved with CyberFair researching! We really appreciate it.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

[Language Art] From collecting data, making questions, compiling web diary and progress report, to interviewing and conforming, all improved our ability to analyze, induct, arrange, and write.

[Social Studies] During the process of interviewing the community, we cared and learned more about humanities to build our love to our society.

[Mathematics] During the process of researching, the angle of throwing Tchoukball is related with the “angle” we learned from math. The location and place of defending the ball are related with we learned about “location” from math.

[Science & Technology] Internet access, computer using, interview recording, video recording, digital camera using, and webpage making can cultivate our ability of good using of technology.

[Health & Physical Education] The Tchoukball knowledge and skill, we learned from school are used at making research, are associated with the game or simple competition. We may know more and more about Tchoukball.

[Arts & Humanities] In practicing and interviewing all school, we appreciate the scenery of all primary school. Integrative Activities Through researching, we cooperated with one another, communicated, and encouraged as team power to accomplish the goal.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

During the process, after setting the research grideline and confirming the direction, all team members collected Tchoukball data from the internet or Nan-Tze library. Although we got some data of playing Tchoukball and rules that way, there is a little related data about Hsiung Tchoukball developing. Interviews are necessary, and we not only interviewed President Mu-Chuan Xiao, but we also went to Tchoukball training school to learn the training process.

In order to understand more about Tchoukball, teacher take us to Kaohsiung Municipal Girls' Senior High School to watch Tchoukball competition, interview ball players, and coach, so we may experience the way of playing the ball and record what we saw, we hope more people know and love Tchoukball, come to scramble for the ball.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

[To us] During this research, what we learned is not only webpage making, but also “ the attitude”, including patience, hardworking and responsibility of collecting data, etiquette of interviewing, communicating with group members, and even time controlling. In addition to, we know some acknowledge and spirit that are hidden behind. We know Tchoukballnas ever given some honor for Taiwan. If everyone propels and loves Tchoukball, Taiwan must become “Tchoukball kingdom”.

[To the place] “2009 World Games in Kaohsiung” not only activate Kaohsiung people work for sports, but bring Taiwan into international . Although Tchouball is one of the competition items in World Games, it is hard to propel this ball game. As president Mu-Chuan Xiao said , parents or kids spent to much time on entering higher school without exercising, we hope to introduce people the sports spirit and Tchouball playing by webpage, people can enjoy “Tchouball”.
