Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Quezon City is one of the cities in the National Capital Region (NCR) with a competitive edge of technology; hailed as the information and communication technology capital of the Philippines. It ranks second in the entire country by the Asian Institute of Management in sustainable development next to Makati. It has also been cited as one of the top 10 Asian Cities of the Future, 7th amongst 200 Asian cities by the Financial Times Magazine of UK and AsiaBIZ Strategy Ltd. of Singapore.

Quezon City has a land area of 160 sq km and occupied by more than two million citizens of all walks of life. It has 142 barangays under four congressional districts. Quezon City boasts of a vibrant and progressive community with leading businesses, information technology companies, top schools and best and state-of–the-art medical centers and services in the country. Furthermore, Quezon City is striving to develop a business district and a productive community with the local government as its heart.

2. Summary of Our Project

Charice Pempengco and Arnel Piñeda came from a Cinderella story. They came from nothing but their talents and perseverance to outwit obstacles made them successful. Charice was left. Who would know that she would eventually become not just an icon here in the Philippines but a global sensation as well? She would receive invitations from famous individuals such as Ellen Degeneres, Celine Dion, Oprah Winfrey and even the 44th President of the USA, Barack Obama. Up to now, she is still in demand in the music industry. Arnel Pineda also had a passion for singing. Even if his mother left him at a very young age, which led to their family’s financial instability, he still persevered. Throughout all this, he never lost hope. Eventually, he received a call from a friend; all this led him to a series of opportunities in the music industry. His biggest break came when he became a sensation in Youtube and was discovered by Journey’s Neal Schon. Now, he is the lead singer of the said band and he continues to make the Filipinos proud.

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

We used computers both in school and at home. Work was done in the High School computer laboratory. Claret School has been wired to the internet since 1999. Our school has four computer laboratories, with 50 workstations in each lab where there is Internet access with speed of 1 GBS. Each computer laboratory is equipped with IBM computer units, 2.4GHz, 256MB of RAM, with PLDT DSL as our Internet Provider

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We had our fair share of problems. We were brand-new high school students and we were adjusting to the workload, teachers and pacing of life in first-year. On top of that, we had numerous other extra-curricular activities, in and out of school and we were almost always not complete during meetings. Our research was also limited to the info available for us on the net. It was easier said than done because our accessibility was also limited. Still, things eventually fell into place and our website finally materialized. Each contributed our part and as a result of commitment and a united effort, our website was born.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We hope that through this website we will help people, especially Pinoys at home and abroad, know more about these two great Filipino talents. We pay them tribute for making us Filipinos proud to be Pinoys. Through them and through our work, we hope to make Filipinos and people around the globe realize how rich our culture is and how talented Filipinos are.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The International Schools Cyberfair project integrates very well in our curriculum particularly in Music, Language and Arts, Reading, Social Studies, computer Education and Values Education. No other projects could match the number of subjects integrated in this single Cyberfair project. We learn not just computer skills on how to build a website but more important is that we learn life skills that we can use in our daily lives. Among them: We learn how to collaborate and work as a team with our project mates. We developed self confidence by interviewing people who can contribute in the improvement of our projects. Asking them for helpful tips and sound advice made us feel more skillful and confident. The use of Internet could not replace actual traditional methods because the teacher is readily available for consultation and advice. furthermore our teachers have a heart. They are caring and loving teachers just like our parents. However, with the help of the Internet, it opens our minds for endless resources, fresh ideas and current trends and practices that we can adapt or innovate in the course of designing our project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

It was a unique opportunity to tell other people about the project, our school and its other activities and to spread the Claretian charm and spirit everyday to others whom we encountered in our community.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We are sure that this project will be an interesting read for everyone. We are certain that through our website people will come to appreciate Charice and Arnel better and people will realize what rich talents Filipinos have. We know children and adults alike will enjoy this experience we have created with our website.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We couldn’t have done it without all the guidance, help and support of the people around us. Special thanks to our Moderator, Mr. Roxan Cosico for steering us and guiding us; to the school administration for giving us this opportunity; and to our parents, for their moral support.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Our first CyberFair experience was truly enlightening and this second time around experience was no less enriching and enlightening. Knowledge really is boundless, and in the process of working on our project, we further honed our skills in the Internet and research and web-paging. We also learned that it was no mean deal trying to come up with a webpage to equal or surpass what we produced a year ago. We could say that despite the hard work, tight schedules and a host of schoolwork, our experience on the team again was something one shouldn’t try and get away from. Working on the team helped build character plus the values of cooperation, unity and perseverance. It was an opportunity indeed to TEACH and UNITE.
