Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The geographic name of the city “Hsinchuang“ means “the new street village”. Owing to DaHan stream and Damsui river, Hsinchuang is one of the earliest metropolises. The old saying “Yi-Fu, Er-Lu, San-Hsinchuang” (First-TainanFu city, Second-LuGang city, Third-:Hsinchuang city) means Hsinchuang city was ranked as the third prosperous city in Taiwan in the past.

Despite of the limited resources, Hsinchuang has been engaged in many important constructions and gradually get rid of its stereo-type impression as an industrial city. Since now the “secondary city-center plan”, “ToQian city plan” and three MRT plan are under construction, Hsinchuang is at the turning point, it will surely become a new city with industrial and commercial prosperous, with prevailing cultural spirits, and with high quality of life in the near future.

2. Summary of Our Project

The Hsinchuang Stadium (Taipei County) is located at Hsinchuang city. The site, the land of 22 hectares and trapezoid-like shape enclosed by FuHsing Rd. Section 1 on the north, ChungHua Rd.Section 1 on the east, Park Rd. on the south, and HoHsing St. on the west, is a very wide “Sport Park” area in the west of Taipei County.

Before the completion of the hardware construction, the site was housed by the American Army Radio Station, fish ponds, some fishing courts and large low-lying farms. The stadium is often called “Hsinchuang Sport Park” or “Hsinchuang Integrated Stadium” by the local residents. The facilities include gymnasium building, baseball field, athletic field, tennis court, basketball court, physical fitness room, sunshine meadow (is usually used to hold activities frequently here),green shadow road, landscape building, waterfall labyrinth, outdoor stage and so on. The Hsinchuang residents may spend their leisure time here and enjoy jogging, playing balls, taking a walk and playing baseball etc.

No matter at dawn or in the evening, the local residents can jog, play with kids, roam and enjoy exhibition fairs here. The Hsinchuang Stadium has become a part of the local residents’ lives. The researchers are very interested in the history of the stadium, the sport courses it provides, the exercising habits of the local residents, as well as the future expectations from the president of the office, the local residents and students.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

The Internet environment we have is the fiber optic network and the computers in the computer classroom. We completed most of the project work in our school during the lunch break and the group activity time. We digested the data collected from the Internet and created our own web page. Besides, we used graphics software and homepage editor to make our animations and homepage.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We have been carrying on this project from last October to this February. The preparation time is quite long. Our research includes many times of questionnaire survey and the interview with the director of Taipei County physical education bureau. Owing to the extremely cold weather in January, we could not help but postponed the questionnaire survey with the nearby residents. Moreover, we did not collect any of the old photos of the Hsinchuang Stadium because the physical education bureau and the residents did not leave any of them. We decided to participate the Internet School Cyber Fair project last October. There are only five months for us to complete a lots of research work. Our team members come from different 6th grade classes. In our school, the 6th graders are very busy everyday. We have to participate many school activities, such as mid-term exam, final exam, graduation trip, sports day activities, making the graduation pictures, preparing Christmas activities and school courses. Thus, our time was quite limited. We had to sacrifice our break time and leisure time to do the data collection, questionnaire design and survey as well as the interview.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The Hsinchuang stadium was a very attractive place for the local residents. Because this project, we had a very good chance to know more about our community and find a good place for us to get healthier and enjoy the happiness to exercise. Most of all, the Hsinchuang Stadium has become a good example for all the Taiwan sports stadium for it has set up a successful model to promote our quality of lives.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In the language area, we promote our ability of data analysis, induction, reorganization and writing by data collection, designing questionnaire, interview and editing the manuscript. In the social studies area, the interview with the director of the Taipei county physical education bureau initiated us the concern and understanding of our community. Throughout the questionnaire survey, we realized the love for our community. In the natural science and life technology, we learn to make good use of the computer technology by using the Internet, recording the interview, digital camera and the homepage editor etc.In the health and physical education area, the questionnaire survey and contact with the residents we learned to keep good manner of politeness and kindness.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

The information tools and technologies we use are digital cameras ( to take the pictures of the interview and related activities), cell phones ( to record the interview ), the computer software of PhotoImpact, Frontpage, GIFAnimator and network browser. (to make the homepage , image processing, data collection and analysis)

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We went to the Taipei County physical education bureau to do the interview. The director and the staffs are very nice and warm-hearted. They are willing to help us in many ways. They are our good example of being an enthusiastic spokesman. Even the security guard offered us many formations when we were doing the survey. He said that most of the residents come to the stadium in the evening. Less residents come at noon. People exercise there more in the summer than in the winter. There are about 10 thousand people go to the stadium everyday.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The project will help us to know more about the unique stadium. We can make good use of it to help us get healthier, especially get more happier when our quality of lives has been improving.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We are really grateful for those who helped us to finish the project. They are the director Mr. Lin, Rui-tai , Mr. Yao, Li-de and Miss Chen Se-li of the Taipei County Physical Education Bureau and the nearby residents who are willing to do our questionnaire survey and interview. Especially thanks to our school teachers Miss Yao, Kun-chi, Mr. Cheng, Shao-lung and Miss Liu, Li-fen for their patient guidance.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We found that there is no stadium manager because our government combined the administration bureaus of Banchao Stadium, the Shulin Stadium and the Hsinchuang Stadium into one. We discovered that “Taipei County Hsinchuang City Stadium” is the official name. “the Hsinchuang Sports Park” and “Hsinchuang Stadium” are the nick name. We also discovered that more residents went to exercise there in the morning, less residents went there in the evening and few residents went there at noon. The numbers of men and women who love to exercise there are about the same The 40-60-year-old people are the major exercising people, while the young exercising people are the minority.
