Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Yonghe was originally a part of Zhonghe. 'Yonghe' means 'eternal peace.' Do not underestimate this little Yonghe. It is one of the most densely populated urban townships. When you think of soymilk, Yonghe must be the first place coming up. Besides soymilk, there are many other well-known stories in Yonghe. Welcome to Yonghe!

2. Summary of Our Project

One of the most well known products from Younghe Township is Soymilk. One of the best places in Younghe Township for great food, great service, not to mention delicious Soymilk Products, is Yongxin Soymilk Cafe. In addition to food, good service, fair prices, the way it can be a sustainable business and customer’s best choice is particularly that Yongxin is one of the providers of “love breakfast” for Yonghe school districts. The “love breakfast” is provided for those who cannot afford breakfast. This is role model for others, and we hope many more “love breakfast” can be more widely spread.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:less than 20

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:1

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

School: Academic Network (T1) Home: ADSL, Dial-Up Networking

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We encountered some language and technical problems during the project. At the interview with the supervisor of Yonghe junior high school, we didn’t understand some Taiwanese he used, and we had to double check with him in Mandarin Chinese. And, we have few experiences on websites construction. So, we need to spend more time doing research and discussion, and fortunately, we can overcome these problems and have this nice outcome.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

In the beginning, we had no idea of where “love Breakfast” comes from? Through this project, we know that it is provided by Yongxin soymilk cafe. When we learned more about Mr. Lai’s stories; we feel we learn more through this project than from book. Failure is the mother of success; in this project, we really see it.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Through this project, we also learn much about expression and communication. Through this, we see the importance of respect and cooperation. Besides, we genuinely experience the connection between people and land; we can see how much people would care about where he or she lives. This, again, is really something that we can’t learn through books.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

? Internet: Search for information of Yongxin soymilk cafe ? Telephone: contact before visiting ? computer and Internet: ask for relevant information ? camera: take pictures for our visit and interview ? Library: group discussion, and rehearsal of interview ? camera: record the visit ? recording pen: record the visit ? computer software: PhotoImpact, SWiSHmax, Dreamweaver, FrontPage

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We get to know Yongxing soymilk café though in-person visit and interview. Through this process, we really feel how much Mr. Lai care about the community he lives how he came up with the ideas of helping students in need in this community. Most of businessmen just think about making money; from Mr. Lai, we can see other possibilities for people to contribute to the community. And also, we can see how people can make his or her wishes and promises come true.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Through this project, we can see how much Mr. Lai insists in the quality of his product. It is always not easy to run a business continuously with same high quality for 25 years, and Yongxing soymilk café is one of them. From this, we actually learn how important it is to do solid work, and not to have the idea of leaving things to chance. Mr. Lai helps community not for the purpose of making himself important; he just would like to contribute what he has to the community. This is a good will we don’t see often now in this society.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We appreciate all the support from principal, supervisors, and school administrators. We thank all customers of Yongxing soymilk café and the supervisor of Counseling and Guidance office in Fuhe junior high school for the interview. We thank all the people who helped us. Finally, we must thank Mr. Lai and his staff members for all the help and information they gave.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Through this project, I find it important for people to work together. It is impossible to construct a website by self; we have to work with some other people. And, in terms of this, it means that we have to finish our own part on time. Sometimes, I find myself being slow and not able to make it on time; it turns out that I still have to spend my own leisure time or time at home finishing it. So, I have to work harder when I work with other people. It is amazing to see what we have done together. Not only do we have sense of achievement, but also we can see the whole thing that we can’t see when each of us did it separately. We are so happy for what we have done and so proud of what we work together for.
