The building is more than 3600 m2 and is connected with the gym. We also have volleyball and Gliwice is situated in the south of Poland. It’s a big city. Our school is located not far handball pitch, as well big recreation area. There are 23 classrooms here including IT classroom, chemistry, physics biology and craft classrooms, gym and library with multimedia studio. We must also mention school canteen, cloakroom and psychologist’s office. Our school is equipped with 24 computers (all connected with internet), multimedia projector, printers, HF, TV and fully equipped classrooms.

2. Summary of Our Project

The purpose of our project was to present historical places in our city. We wanted people all over the world to get know about Poland and Gliwice, which is the place very important for history of Europe and world. This is a place where the World War II began! We also want to develop the regional identity of inhabitants of our city, especially children and teenagers.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We joined the CyberFair project for the first time. The students involved in project were from different classes and they were supervised by different teachers. The first problem was to coordinate their work. Using email turned out to be the best solution, since it enabled fast exchange of ideas. Another problem was with finding people responsible for giving consent for usage of materials and photos on our website. We had also problem with very limited number of students – translators. Some of students resigned, so we had to find others to replace them in very short time.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

While working on project our students had to complete tasks different than tasks they meet at school. They also had opportunity to meet members of local authority and media. They used English in everyday situations. The project helped them to gain and reinforce both local and European identity.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our students learnt many useful skills such as searching for information and analysing it, cooperation in group, and responsibility for tasks. They also had opportunity to develop their language abilities and editorial skills both in English and Polish. They develop their abilities in using IT technology. Moreover, project integrated knowledge of different subjects such as history, geography, polish and English language. The project proved that our education system enables our students to gain many useful and practical abilities.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

dostepne u nas w szkole. The most valuable tools were computers and Internet but we also used books, interviews and local museums. We used following software: Microsoft Word to edit information , MS Internet Explorer and Internet browser such as dictionaries and encyclopaedia to search the net, Microsoft Front Page to design our internet sites and sometimes Windows Notepad to correct our HTML, Macromedia Flash MX to design presentations and animations, and MS Photo Editor and Corel Draw to processing photos. We’d like to admit that our school has fully equipped computers so we didn’t have problems with finding necessary tools. To complete our project we used 6 PC Celeron 433 MHz, computers, privet computers of students and teachers, printers, scanners, telephones, Internet, library, museum and interviews

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

During completing our project students took part in Gliwice Cultural Heritage Festival which Has been organized by Museum since 2003. This year it was sixth editions of the festival and its main subject was ‘former hotels, restaurants, cafes and pubs’. These events help to popularize historical and cultural education, promote regional heritage and underline common roots of European culture. Students of our school are always encouraged to participate in this festival and we know that many of them take part in it with their parents. Many parents got involved in the project and they gave us the use of old photos and postcards. Our students for many years have been also taking part in history lessons organized in Radio station. These lessons are prepared by Mr Andrzej Jarczewski.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our project extends knowledge about our city, our region, monuments and history. It encourages visiting numerous historical places in our city and reinforces local patriotism. We hope that many members of local authority will visit our website which helps to promote our city and our school in local community.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Everyone who helped us in collecting materials and gave us the use of photos, pictures and information about historical places received special thanks. We also want to express gratitude to Mr Andrzej Jarczewski for history lessons in Radio station. Below we present teachers involved in project: Mrs Jolanta Spaczynska and Mr Stanislaw Dumanowski – IT teachers. Mrs Spaczynska is also responsible for photos. Mrs Joanna Górowska – Goslawska - English teacher who helped in publishing texts in English and checked student’s translations. Mrs Grazyna Mietus and Mr Krzysztof Gierszal – Polish teachers who were our consultants during preparing Polish version of project and checked and corrected Polish texts. Mrs Grazyna Mietus was also main coordinator of the project and its main initiator.
