Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our school is located in Puyang Town, Dujiangyan City which has beautiful scenery and rich tourist resources. The forests cover 51% of the whole area. There are a lot of scenic spots here such as the Huangfen Channel and folk street. There are 'one zone and three parks' in the town. One zone refers to Puyang Industrial Zone which is invested and built by Taiwan Zhengfeng Group Co.,Ltd. The first park is the fruit park which is invested and built by Chengdu Taoyuan Industrial Company and professionals in Sichuan Forestry Institute. There are some new fruits in their park such as American black peach, red peach and winter peach. Built by China Academy of Sciences Huaxiya Gaoshan Botanical Garden and Dujiangyan Bureau of Forestry, the second park is the vegetable park in which there are some edible bamboo such as Ma Bamboo and Xue Bamboo, high-quality Huangzhu Grass, and peony for viewing and for curing. The third park is the animal park which is invested and built by Agricultural Institute, and in which some special species are cultivated such as deers and bears.

2. Summary of Our Project

Ingeniously designed, the Dujiangyan Project plays an important role in discharging the water and irrigating the farmlands, which brings prosperity to Chengdu Plain. The main method used in the Dujiangyan Project is the bamboo cages filled with pebbles. It plays very important part in protecting banks and building dams. Nowadays, these bamboo cages have become a kind of works of art in people's lives.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

There are two computer classrooms in our school with more than 80 computers used for students and in all there are more than 100 computers in our school. All the computers can get online. There are networks in our school and between our school and other primary and middle schools in Dujiangyan City. The students can get access to the computers in the school and some of them can also get online at home. Therefore, the students can use the networks at home or in school or on the communication platform provided by Town and Talent Co,Ltd to discuss and send their messages.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The biggest difficulty lies in ourselves. We have been used to traditional learning method which lacks the ability of judgment and organization. As for this activity, we should change our learning method. No one tells us how to work out the plan, how to collect materials and how to sort out them. Furthermore, what we research on is the project that is more than 2000 years old. And there are very little relevant materials and photographs left. We have to interview with many local people and note down useful data. Although there are hardships in the research, we have learned a lot.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

This activity makes us realize the importance of the Dujiangyan Project which shows the great ability of our ancestors the conquer the nature. The wisdom and creation of our ancestors make our nation industrious, courageous, and full of wisdom. Our generation will try our best to hand down the good traditions. What we get most is working wonders by overcoming the difficulties. According to questionnaire, more people get to know our research and purpose. When we were interviewing Mr. Wu, he told us that the government needed to carry out a series of policies to develop our culture and tradition, especially the bamboo cages.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In the last year, we have learned Lesson 11 'The Wisdom and Creation of Our Ancestors'in history which has close relationship with our research topic - bamboo cages in Dujiangyan. This activity makes us further understand the local history, the wisdom and creation of our ancestors, and our nation as an industrious and courageous nation. The research covers a wide range such as Chinese, mathematics, history, natural sciences, and technology. In the interviews with the local people, the students should always discuss their topic and improve their materials, which makes us learn more other than the knowledge learned in class, as well as more opportunities to apply our knowledge in the real life.

Although we have learned something about the Dujiangyan Project in history in the last year, we learn more knowledge from this competition other than what we have learned in our class. In this activity, we realize the importance of teamwork. We should speak politely to others when we want to communicate with other students. And we have never given up when we encounter difficulties.
