Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Neihu District is one of Taipei City's twelve districts. Neihu's attractions include Dahu Park, famous for its picturesque footbridge, and Bishan Temple, a large Taoist temple dedicated to Chen Yuanguang on the mountainside that affords a panoramic view of Taipei. In the vicinity of Bishan Temple are a number of other Taoist and Buddhist temples, as well as orchards and fruit farms where tourists can pick their own fruit. An extensive network of hiking trails criss-crosses the mountainous regions of the northern part of Neihu. Over the past ten years, there has been an economic boom in Nei-hu because of the Nei-hu Science Park, the second-highest Ferris Wheel in Asia, and Tri-Service General Hospital.

2. Summary of Our Project

The Taipei Metro Nei-hu Line is a Phase 2 Brown Line extension currently under construction. The line is a medium capacity system, most of the line is on an elevated corridor except near Sung-shan Airport. When completed, it will have a total length of 14.8 km and will connect directly to the Mu-zha Line, providing transfer to Nei-hu, Nan-gang and Mu-zha. It is expected to be finished in June, 2009. Our project aims to examine the construction of it and discuss the effects it will have on the people.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Instead of employing commonly-used software to produce our web pages, we choose InfoPath and Publisher to produce the written content of our web site. Since three participants in our team constantly take lessons on software application, we often share the skills with one another and work together for better effects, layouts, and content. Moreover, one of the teammates also received Microsoft-related international license, which helped a lot during our production as well.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The main problem that we encountered is to recruit the suitable teammates to involve in the project. We look for people who are responsible and aggressive. Most of all, we are in pursuit of people who are capable of integrating all the skills they have learned. In addition, the teammates have to arrange meetings for preparations and discussions. Therefore, we learned to prioritize our time and schedule in order to carry out the research.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

“Strive for the best” is the only goal we pursue. “Persist in our efforts to do the project” is the principle we stick to.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In the production of web page, we had a few disagreements sometimes. However, through discussions, meetings, and visiting, we found this learning experience rewarding. Besides, we tried to use different software to design and produce our web pages. We even used newer versions of the software with different functions for the editing. When designing the written report, we employed InfoPath2007, which is not commonly used among students of our age. Each participant learned from one another and helped one another apply the skills as well. As the students of the Computer Science at school, we can have hands-on training with computers and facilities that have met certain requirements. Also, we can employ digital learning system to enhance our learning at the same time. Working on the project enables us to integrate what we have learned and what the school has offered to our learning. Last but not least, we finally realize the power of teamwork in the process of conducting the research. Each participant has to make efforts to complete the project. We hope, by working together for the project, the world will get to know Taiwan better and the community that we explore.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

1. Microsoft Office InfoPath 2007 is used for making progress report by the group who is in charge of interviewing. 2. Microsoft Office Word 2003 is used for editing by all the groups. 3. Microsoft Vista and Microsoft XP SP2 are used for the implementation of various software. 4. Macromedia Dreamweaver 8, Ulead PhotoImpact 12, and Microsoft Office Picture Manager are used for editing photos and designing web pages by the groups who are in charge of web page design and word editing. 5. Microsoft Internet Explorer is used for information searching, previewing web pages, and uploading progress report by all the groups. 6. Yahoo Messenger is used for online conferences by all the groups. 7. The World 2.0 is used for web page testing by the group who is in charge of web page design.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Students who are involved in this project interviewed a resident in Nei-hu, Mr. Chen, who has lived in this district for a long time. He takes great interest in our project and looks forward to the construction of the metro system and the convenience and prosperity that it will bring to the local residents. For Mr. Chen, the metro system will make his place within easy commuting distance of the city, which can definitely save him a great deal of time. As “ambassadors” and spokespersons for the project, we would like to hear more people voice their opinions about the metro system.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our research on the Nei-hu MRT Line is a way for us, as students, to show our love and expectations for our community. We hope that the production of the web content can help people get to know the construction of Nei-hu MRT Line and make Nei-hu a tourist attraction as well. Also, by examining the web pages we created, even people with little understanding about construction and engineering can be better aware of how modern constructions work wonders for our community.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Working on this project is a journey. However, wth the help and support of many people, we finally did it. Our gratitude goes to Mr. Jin-zan Chen, who provided us with a great deal of cultural and historical data of Nei-hu District. We also appreciate our English teacher, Ms. Yi-fang Hsieh, who helped us on part of the translation of the web pages. In addition, we are profoundly indebted to our beloved homeroom teacher, Mr. Lin-chuan Liu, who has been so helpful on contacting people associated with our project and encourages us to go further. Our special gratitude goes to the staff of East District Project Office, who provided us with lots of relevant information and helped us with the fieldwork as well. Lastly, our deepest appreciation goes to the Director of Computer Center of our school, Mr. Mu-hui Lai, who assisted us in all the interviewing, fieldwork, and photo-taking.
