Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The Xiji county is located on the southwest edge of southern mountain area of Ningxia Hui Nationality Autonomous Region and has typical dry and half dry continent weather characteristics, belonging to medium temperate zone half dry, dry steppe living creature climatic zone. Equally decline water to measure is 427.9 mms for several years. Most water concentrates in July, August, and September. Average evaporating amount is 1482.3 mms for several years, is 3.4 times of decline amount of water. Annually spring sowing, the soil is dry and cracked and the grain seedling is hard to sprout. Dry has become people's serious trouble. For make a living, people have to give up agriculture and go out for part-time jobs. The geography type of the loess plateau of the south of Ningxia is mainly loess mound and erosion river valley. The loess mound is mainly distributed in the west of Majian County. The loess beam growing, the geography broken up, the ditch valley incises mightiness, soil erosion severity, land degeneration to the region bring much harm to production, ecosystem, social development. And for people’s ignorance, over chopping down, and steal herding thief to herd, the big area forest destroy, the sandstorm rising result in vicious cycle of environment. People are struggling on the poor dead line. Some factories here do not protect water resources; eject industrial waste water to the river, lake, which results in pollution of fresh water resources and groundwater resources. White garbage is everywhere, which seriously pollute our homes.

2. Summary of Our Project

'The western sea solid' is located at south mountain area: the bitterest in the world and the poorest in the world. Millions of Hui, Han people live there. And it has been reviewed as “the most unwell pleasant type for living' by United Nations. Deep ditch mountain, secluded desolate, bad weather, the people cultural character falling behind, living difficult, over cultivate to over fell, urge environment to worsen day by day, lack of water resources is strange to, soil erosion severity ……these kinds situation result in deep echo among young generation, especially the young students. The classmate devotes to depend on oneself to change present condition, and to change living environment.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1.It goes on with its process basically. In the second period, heavy rain and slippery road affect our interview outside.2.Time arrangement is urgent. Usually, we do not have large amount of time to devote in special subject research.3.In this activity, for lack of experiences, we detour a lot.4.Many materials are hard to get, such as the photos remained by ancestors. The misunderstanding of common people leads to difficulty in collecting information.5.During the whole activity, facing problems and difficulties, we have many diverges, which lead to small dissensions. 6.Our countryside kids have never gone out. Most of us have car sickness. Some places do not have vehicles; we have to walk for tens of kilometers. Many students have blebs on their feet.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We know and understand the natural environment of our existence and feel the importance of the environmental protection through this special subject research. Team members overcome various difficulties with strong personality, publicize and protect environment; make more people cherish nature, and cherish our existence environment. Through this subject research activity, students know and understand more about the important meanings of environmental protection. And the students know the seriousness and necessity to protect environment, and gradually have the sense of responsibility.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Teaching and study at school, not only includes 45 minutes, also not only is the knowledge in book, but also know how to learn in reality, and apply the knowledge learn from book in practice. This is very important. Therefore, this special subject research gives students many opportunities to practice and apply knowledge, and even let the students learn knowledge and experience that could not be gotten from lessons. This is wealth, the wealth of children. Through this subject research activity, students know and understand more about the important meanings of environmental protection. And the students know the seriousness and necessity to protect environment, and gradually have the sense of responsibility.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In this activity, we clearly know any subject can not be learned lonely, each of us if one part of the team, and one part of community. Therefore, we practice a lot in daily study and life. Every member of team realized the organization, division of labor, management...etc. in the practice. Team members also make large contribution as they can. In this activity, we learn how to interview, photograph, collect material, refine topic and program an activity; how to communicate, cooperate with people, learn computer application, special subject manuscript writing etc. In the activity, we don't pay attention to personal attention, but always take team benefits as important, to develop own talents on the foundation of team and share viewpoints with everyone. We discuss, research and practice in harmony atmosphere.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Life becomes fascinating for our existence! Society becomes more harmonious for our existence! Environment becomes more beautiful for our existence! We have a passion for green, we invoke green, although we are small, like small ant, but we get together and then become a great power. Depending on this great power, we can move world, protect our homes; let us live in the fine environment of 'green village outside mountain, green shade after eaves'. these kinds situation result in deep echo among young generation, especially the young students. The classmate devotes to depend on oneself to change present condition, and to change living environment. 4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

After interviewing grandmother Zhang on October 26, 2007, on the way to another interview object, we see a middle age man just at slope sweep leaf and fold tree branch. We change our interview object at the time and walk up to this middle age man. We ask: What are you doing? The middle age answer: To find some firewood, there is none in home. We: Uncle this tree is still living, how could you fold it? Middle age: Nothing! Take home and dry in the sun. We: Uncle, do you usually seek fuel so? Middle age: Yes, what’s wrong? Please wait a moment, the middle age said again: the home is too poor to afford carbon. The trees of top of hill are not in use. We: If people are all similar to you, there will be no tree or no grass on the top of hill. Then our environment will be more and more bad? Uncle: All of our generations live in this way, and do not see any difference! We: Uncle, we have a form, please have a look and sign on it. Uncle: I am illiterate! We are at a loss……

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

'Only on TV medium I saw an interview, I have never thought in person' this is a sentence that team members and local common people have. During interview, Team members found the adults very happy and very actively to accept an interview. We scarcely go out and do not the environment outside, but through our interview and inspection, we know more clearly our existence environment. Environment problem is a long-term task.. In the activity, we understand environment, nature, operate computer, understand calculation data, and cultivate our affection on home town, on environment, cooperation spirit. This activity impresses us a lot. It is a comprehensive lesson.
