1. Description of Our Community

The essence of Love River extends from Kaohsiung port, going up to the middle section of Love River where tourist attractions lie. The heart of it includes the river itself and surrounding land and industry, extending 6 kilometers. It is one of the top ten tourist spots in Taiwan. The reborn Love River has great potentials for future development

2. Summary of Our Project

This project conducts a detailed research on the restoration and tourism development of the Love River. In addition, we make a projection of the future of Love River based on its past history and present condition.

The computers in our school operate on Microsoft XP with a connection speed of 8Mbs. The PCs in the members’ homes are all Microsoft XP or beyond, with a connection speed over 256 Kbs.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We have encountered a great number of problems along the way. At first, we had a hard time recruiting members and looking for teachers willing to instruct us in various ways. We were also faced with difficulties both in interviewing with government officials and in conducting questionnaires. At a later stage, the problem we encountered was the lack of time. However, we did not just endured the difficulties passively. Instead, with hard work and perseverance, we turned the obstacles into a driving force, pushing us to stick to it until the very end.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We began to realize that water is the source of life and the mother of all creatures. Without water, nothing could happen. On a planet with serious pollution problems, this is an issue worth our awareness because we need to cherish this valuable resource we have.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We have learned various new skills during the process in completing this project, such as sampling and statistics, which is a required course for a second-year student in senior high schools. Our linguistic competence is elevated through composing and repeated revisions. Our team work also proves an adage real, “Union is strength.” There are people with various skills and strengths, so when everyone is combined in a joint effort, there is nothing impossible. Doing a project on a webpage is a meaningful work. But if everything is not digitalized and put on the Internet, it might not have been so useful. We did not explore this issue deeply enough to make a conclusion, but we do know that when we gained something, we may have lost something else at the same time. This project may serve for the government as a promotional tool for tourism in the future. On a smaller scale, we also hope that it will turn out to be a valuable addition to our portfolio when we apply for the university in the future. It is our greatest expectation that this project will be proven useful for someone who is conducting a study on the Love River.

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We rely mainly on the computer to complete this project, including information gathering, article composing and webpage designing. In addition, cameras and digital video camcorders are our best companions on a field trip, helping us gather valuable information. We also use softwares such as Microsoft Word and Frontpage, Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Dreamweaver and Photoimpact.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Through our investigation and poll, we got to know how the Kaohsiung residents view the Love River. It is also through this project that we bring the other less-known side of her to the public’s eye. We hope that people will have a deeper understanding of Love River. Moreover, we hope to show the world through Cyberfair that there exists such a beautiful river in Taiwan.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Through our website, we will show people the beauty of Love River, thereby attracting visitors to come. In addition to promoting tourism, we hope to draw the government’s attention to this new landmark of Kaohsiung, facilitating the reincarnation of Love River, giving the residents of Kaohsiung a brighter future.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Our team consists mainly of senior high school students, with Mr. Jung-Yi Chiang, Ms. Man-chiang Hung, Ms. Chin-yu Huang and Ms. Fang-chun Liu as our instructors. Mr. Chiang provided us with the hardware and software needed, such as computers and digital cameras. Ms. Hung and Ms. Liu helped us with the English translation. And Ms. Huang gave us tremendous assistance in webpage designing and art designs. Mr. Frank Hsieh, former Mayor of Kaohsiung City, shared with us his policies when he was in office and all the relevant details concerning the Love River. Kaohsiung Museum of History contributed five precious historic photographs of the Love River. In addition, we have attained information concerning the restoration of Love River from the website and publications of the Sewerage Department of Kaohsiung Municipal Government. The geographic and tourism information of the Love River comes from the Lover River Website.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Through this project, we got to explore the other side of Kaohsiung less known to the public and began to have an understanding of the so-called “urban regeneration development”, “the restoration of a river”. More importantly, we have learned to make a prediction of the future based on past and current events. We have also learned that cooperation is essential in teamwork. It is only when individuals put their potentials to the utmost use and join their efforts together that maximal benefits can be achieved
