Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The Muden Village Incident was a complicated event in history, most people thought that it happened just because Taiwan's original resident are savage. Is it true? In 1871, 69 seamen from Miyako Island in the Ryukyu Archipelago or Orkinawa were shipwrecked along Taiwan's coast and 66 survivors floated to Bayao Bay (today's Jioupeng), where 54 of them were subsequently killed by local Aborigines upon stumbling into Mudan Village, the rest 12 people were sent back to Japan. In 1874, Japanese army deployed an expeditionary force to Taiwan on the pretext of protecting Okinawas, setting into motion the series of events which go by the name 'Mudan Village Incident'. 'Mudan Village Incident' explained Japan's ambition on invading Taiwan and reminded Ching Court to strengthen Taiwan's defenses. Therefore, Shen Bao Jhen, the minister of shipping affairs in Fukien Province, was sent to Taiwan to enhance matters pertaining to defense. Awalled town was built nearby in 1875, and it was named Hengchun. Now, we try to investigate the beginning and subsequent development of Mudan Village Incident by visiting the historical landmarks which the seamen from Miyako Island, Taiwan's original resident, the Japanese military forces, and Ching government left behind. Finally, we want to find the actual state of this affair; and to prove the aborigines were guiltless.

2. Summary of Our Project

The procedures of our study are following: 1. Collecting information of Mudan Village Incident from documents, books, Internet, etc. 2. Interviewing the grand old men, experts, researcher and local people. 3. During the study, we will find more questions and answers. 4. Organizing the informations we got systematically. 5. having a meeting to discuss our works. 6. start to make our website 7. Make a presentation in the class

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our school is located in the faraway country. All computer hardware facilities are not sufficient. There is a computer classroom in our school. It just enough for us to do our study, reach information, edit our acticles, trim the photos, design the wibesite, etc.. We know not much about the internet environment and computer skill when beginning. Now we get more familiar with how to get information from internet and how to fisnish our work. We have to thanks our teachers for their instruction. As the facilities sre not easy to get, we treasure any equipment we have and any chance we have. We try our best to finish the project and attend the International Schools CyberFair. We Learn and Unite!

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1. It’s a big challenge for us to accomplish the whole project by ourselves. We never do this before. 2. We don’t have the abilities to use computer technical tools skillfully. 3. How to make the appropriate schedule is quite difficult. 4. How to choose the useful informations from a huge pile of references. 5. Make the dates with who we want to interview. 6. Put the materials to our web site properly. 7. Translate all our work to English is most difficult part for us. Although such a adventure are waiting for us, we will try our best to overcome it.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We learn a lots form this project. We recognize how the city name of 'HengChun' come from. We know the fact of 'Mudan Incident'. We take a look of whole Mudan Incident from the Ryukyu seamen's viewpoint, Japanese viewpoint, Ch'ing viewpoint, and aboriginal viewpoint. It's not just the boring content of our textbook. It's vivid for us! How important the event is, it's the key point for the development of modern Taiwan. It’s the beginning for the Taiwan Aboriginal to fight and protect their own homeland. At the end of our study, we review the International Conference for Retrospection of the 130 Years of Mudan Incident in 2004,and the trip of Lin Jiesi (???), mayor of Mudan Township, lead 10 descendants of victims in the Mudan Village Incident, to Okinawa on June 15 to 19.2005. The encounter aims to reach reconciliation and symbiosis. It's warm, touched and meaningful. Return the truth of history, and clarify the misunderstanding, and spread the love. That's the real value why we learn history.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Mudan Incident is our topic for this International Schools CyberFair project. We focuse on the reasons, duration, result and influences of Mudan incident. We combine the project activities with Grades 1 to 9 Curriculums and our school-based curriculum. 1. Be able to analyze the impacts on space design and environment types that personal temperaments, cultural backgrounds, social systems, and natural environments exert 2. Be able to know the important people and events of Taiwan from past to now. 3. Be able to study the origin of Taiwan culture, and be able to appreciate the contents of Taiwan culture. 4. Be able to understand the characteristics of any roles, and relationship between the roles. 5. Combine the project with our own school-based curriculum. Let it be the integrated curriculum in Social Studies, Chinese, and Arts and Humanities.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Internet:1.Use the internet browser to collect the information we need. 2.Use E-mail to connect with the persons we want to interview and with our team members. 3.Use E-mail to sent our reports to the teachers. Digital cameras: To take the photos of visits, interviews, activities, and the places we went. Digital video cameras: To take the videos of the whole duration of activities and the interviews. Images retrieved facility: To arrange the photos and videos we made from cameras to computers Scanners: Scann pictures and pages. Telephones: Connect with the persons we want to interview and with our team members. Softwares: Ulead PhotoImpact, Macromedia Dreamweaver MX, Macromedia Flash MX, Macromedia Fireworks MX, Micosoft WORD, Micosoft Powerpoint, Ulead VideoStudio 9, etc.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The students are all 5th grade. They got no ideal about Mudan incident at beginning. We got lots of informations by interviewing the related persons and by visiting the historical spots. 1. We can interview the descendant of Yang You-Wang 2. We can interview the descendant of Sinvaudjan. 3. We can interview the town mayor of Mudan and the senior history researchers. Those are meaningful gains for students. When we listen the storys, it just like the Mudan incident happened lately

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We get familiar with E-learning and E-sharing. Our team members used the web-pages to present our research achievements. Though not perfect, they gave us the precious experiences of learning and sharing online. We learned to cooperate, face challenges, and grow through hard work. The final product online was a presentation of the team effort. We worked hard together to collect data, make visits to people and places, and devise web-pages. Although we came across some bottlenecks and difficulties, we solved them through brainstorming. Now, we are a research team with esprit de corps.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Most of the pictures we used on our web-pages were taken by ourselves. The materials cited from books and the Internet were listed in detail in the section References.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

1. We learn a lot about the origin of the place name where we live nearby. 2. We learn the basic manners. for example, we must to make a reservation to the person we want to interview, tell them the topic we want to discuss in advance, and meet them on time, etc. 3. We learn the importance of teamwork, plan, cooperation. 4. We learn to respect the aboriginal culture.
